About this deal

If your peony bush is too large to use grow through plant supports, then you can create a DIY peony cage using plant stakes and ties. You might also consider creating rings or lines of stakes around a clump, or several peony clumps, with natural twine or other strings between them. 2) Plant Support Hoops If we were just supporting the peony bush then the ring would be sufficient but supporting the big blousy flowers takes a little more added to the top ring of the cage. Peonies tend to be dramatic, flopping over just as they reach their peak blooms. To stop this from happening, you need to place peony supports before they get too big.

You want the peony to still be in a tight bud. When you squeeze, it should feel like a squishy marshmallow. Most of the bud will still be green, with about ½ inch of colorful petals visible. No assembly required — You don’t have to worry about fiddling with spanners or screws. Your peony cage will arrive as a solid piece of raw or plastic-coated steel. Delivery is Mainland UK and excludes The Highlands and Isle of Wight, Isle of man and Channel Islands.Regardless of whether you are using compost or fertilizer, distribute it around the crown but not on it to prevent damaging the plant. What I love about these more decorative ones is even when the peonies are dormant the supports look beautiful in the garden beds. Overall, peonies are a hardy plant and you don’t have to worry too much about possible pests. Even the deer and rabbits don’t like them.

Another way to support peonies is with plant support hoops, which completely encircle a peony clump and provide it with some support.

Keep the portion you cut off, this can still be used to support things in your garden, even smaller peony bushes. (if planting from peonies bare-root it can take a few years for them to fill in) Supporting Peonies when Flowering

As the peony grows taller make sure the buds are threaded through the grid to support the flowers individually. But don’t worry if you forgot, you can still stake your peonies after the flowers have opened, and save them from crashing to the ground. Medium Green Heavy Duty Peony Support

Once you’ve planted your flower, now it’s time to care for it! Learn how to grow peonies that thrive with these simple tips. Water To help prevent the fungus from surviving the winter on old leaves, a good fall clean up is important. Remove any fallen foliage and other plant debris around the peony. Then throw all of it into the garbage (not the compost pile) to avoid contaminating other parts of your garden. If you're interested in a bit of DIY, head to our piece on how to make your own plant supports, but if you don't have the time, and you like the trend for metal rusty peony supports, then below is our list of our favourite peony supports. Don’t cut peony foliage down to the ground too early or your peony won’t have enough time to store up the energy it needs to bloom in the spring. Remove the spent peony flowers as the petals start to turn brown. This will encourage the small buds to open, extending the bloom time.
