While Yoshi himself does not have any distinct special abilities, he can use each of the three other Yoshis' abilities by holding a shell of the same color as the respective Yoshi, such as a red shell allowing him to spit out Fireballs. By extension, the other three Yoshis can do the same.

Yoshi is also the only fighter among the single-fighter universes to remain a starter in each game he appears in. This also means he has been using the same voice clips longer than any other character in the Super Smash Bros. series. Yoshi's Ring Shot, meanwhile, is designed for up to four players, and adds an additional twist to the standard Ring Shot rules by awarding four times as many points to those players that manage to get their ball through a hoop that matches the colour of their Yoshi. Wii), Yoshi and his friends are "voiced" by the sound of two pitch-bended orchestra hits (in Super Mario World only Yoshi speaks with a text bubble, though this was changed in the Super Mario Advance 2 version). In Yoshi's Story and many later games, the Yoshis are voiced by Nintendo musician Kazumi Totaka, who mutters the word "Yoshi" as well as a series of intelligible and unintelligible words, such as "Blum" and "Ho Hup".
