About this deal

Foam. Foam earplugs are the most inexpensive option. They’re also soft, which makes them a good choice for sleeping. However, their porous material makes them a good environment for bacteria, so you’ll need to replace them often. They are also non-flammable, which seems like a good quality. Until you realize that if there is a flame close enough to your head that there is a risk of your earplugs lighting up, I don’t think it matters too much how inflammable they are!

Pricier products tend to have extras, such as a range of differently sized ear bud tips, soft medical-grade silicone, or performance coatings (eg aloe vera or antibacterial silver, hypoallergenic). Our ears are pretty sensitive, so it’s important to know not to damage them. Earplugs are nowhere near long enough to risk touching your eardrum, but using earplugs frequently can still push ear wax deep into the ear canal and cause a buildup, which may lead to infection. Similarly, there can be bacteria on an earplug itself, particularly with more porous materials like foam. Regularly washing reusable earplugs with warm soapy water will help to keep them clean. Can I reuse my earplugs? Does it help you sleep, though? I’m a side sleeper, and I’ve never found an earphone that I can lie on without it hurting my ear. QuietOn are three times smaller than Apple Airpods Pro, a remarkable feat. I couldn’t feel them at all for the first few hours of the night, which was enough for me to nod off in peace. Disposable ear plugs will cost you more over time as you'll need to keep buying them. Some can be re-used up to 100 times, while others will need replacing almost daily. For standard ear plugs noise reduction levels range from 16 to 38 decibels, though most we saw averaged around 25-27 decibels. As for their noise reduction abilities, these earplugs passed our testing with flying colors. Not only did they muffle sounds, but they also allow enough sound to filter in so that you can still hear critical sounds. These Howard Leight by Honeywell Laser Lite earplugs are both affordable and effective. They come with a noise reduction rating of 32 decibels, which is pretty impressive for such an inexpensive pair. Plus, the unique contoured shape of the earplugs means they are easy to insert and stay put even when sleeping on your side. Even if an earplug does happen to fall out—which is unlikely—the bright colors make them easy to spot in the bed or on the floor.

However, while the foam makes them great for larger ear canals, it also makes them risky for anyone with indoor allergies as foam lets in material that can aggravate allergic symptoms like dust mite particles. If you suffer from severe indoor allergies, we recommend springing for a wax or silicone option on this list. The earplugs come with three different ear tip sizes so you can find the ideal fit for your ear canal and a small carrying case that makes them easier to travel with. We also spoke to two sleep experts to discuss what to look for when selecting earplugs. Experts we spoke to included: Reusable vs. single-use: There are pros and cons to both types. Of course, disposable earplugs are usually cheaper. However, they’re also not as durable or environmentally friendly. Earplugs can also build up gunk if they’re not used as intended (if they’re used more than once). Our tester mentioned that it’s pretty hard to distinguish between the left and right buds, however, which may cause problems if you reach for them in the dark. Also, they require you to use a mobile app, which our tester said wasn’t the easiest to navigate. Opt for a standard pair on this list if you're not interested in earplugs requiring an app. Most earplugs are made from foam, silicone or wax. Foam earplugs are the cheapest and most readily available, but as the material is porous and bacteria-friendly they should be for one-time use only. Wax and silicone earplugs have similar qualities: they’re moulded into the shape of your ear so usually fit more securely than foam, plus they can be reused until no longer pliant. My personal Favourite is the Deep Sleep Soft Ear Plugs For Sleeping. They’re the ones I use and the earplugs I’m wearing in the picture at the start. Some ear plugs are made of other materials - for example, Alpine uses its own patented non-silicone material for its SleepSoft range, and Happy Ears ear plugs have an ABS core and Thermoplastic elastomer outer part. How much can you re-use ear plugs? Tinnitus is an internal ‘phantom sound’ that only you can hear. For some people with tinnitus, loud external noise is a trigger that increases the perceived volume of their internal noise. Noisy environments can all have this effect, including: The Kokoon app is full of calming sounds to help you drift off, and these can be combined with gentle guided meditations or soothing abstract music to create a custom soundscape. During the day, you can use the Nightbuds to help you concentrate at work, or listen to mini lectures on the biology of sleep, and why it's so important. It's truly impressive.

If you're looking to protect your hearing from excessive noise, choose carefully to match the activity and level of noise. One caveat is that if you have large ear canals these have a tendency to fall out when you are sleeping. They are adjustable, but they fit best with small to medium-sized ear canals. Also, unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn’t give the sound rating for decibels. From silicone to wax, we’ve tested and reviewed the best sleeping earplugs to help you find the pair that helps you get the much-needed sleep you deserve. An integrative neurologist and sleep medicine physician on our Medical Expert Board also reviewed this article for medical and scientific accuracy surrounding what to look for in earplugs for sleeping, which are most effective, and whether you should sleep with them at all. The earplugs are made from a low-pressure, slow-release foam that is both soft and squishy. As an added bonus, their cushy feel doesn’t irritate the delicate skin of your ear canal. Plus, with 50 earplugs in one bottle, they last quite a long time. But you might also choose to buy ear defenders for use at home - for example, when you're doing DIY or doing loud garden machinery work (strimming, mowing, digging up concrete etc) for an extended time. It’s also important to replace your earplugs as soon as you notice any signs of damage or wear, Dr. Harris says. Wearing damaged earplugs could put you at risk for injury, especially if part of an earplug breaks off in your ear. Keep in mind that some earplugs are designed to be worn only once and then discarded.

We tested more earplugs but ultimately decided to leave them off this list. While some had redeeming qualities, they fell short compared to what we recommend here. However, they may still be good options for you to consider. The most dangerous potential effect of wearing earplugs is an infection. It isn’t common, however, it is something that needs to be considered. Earplugs can be a nice home for bacteria if they are not properly cared for. Particularly those made out of foam that is porous enough to provide a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Material: This will determine the quality and comfort of the earplugs. Typical materials used are silicone, wax, foam and cotton. Foam is typically the most common earplug material because it's the cheapest. Silicone on the other hand is what you'll find most reusable options made out of. Wax earplugs give you the benefit of being able to mold them to the shape of your ear.Ear defenders won't necessarily reduce noise better than correctly-worn ear plugs with the same attenuation but they're likely to be more suited to wearing for longer periods, may be designed to reduce noise at certain frequencies or have features such as built-in microphones, and might be more comfortable to wear. Interestingly, when I wore them in the office I couldn’t hear my colleague sitting next to me but I could hear a high-pitched conversation on the other side of the room incredibly clearly, as if I had super-hearing. Spies will be very interested in this feature – especially since they’re so small as to be invisible. We tested 30 earplugs at a range of price points, each with different features and materials. During the testing period, each set of earplugs was used for a minimum of one week (but sometimes longer) and evaluated based on how it impacted our nightly sleep and noise levels.
