GURPS Fantasy II: The Soulless. All of them have been alive for some twenty millennia, but can only clearly remember a small fraction of that, and most don't remember anything from their earliest times. They even have a name for one of the side effects of this: pytrakzhyjzh is "that uncomfortable feeling when you can tell you have some significant past history with another person, but have no idea what kind of history". The Minotaur in Steven Sherrill's novel is a being I can relate to. He has a hulking frame that tends to bump into things, is quiet and introspective, feels like a bit of an outsider in the ordinary human world, and doesn't always know the best way to verbalize his thoughts, so he often just says "mmmmm". There's not much that "happens" in this novel, which has the feel of one those subdued indie films in which the characters carry out their normal lives in a way meant to show the profundity of everyday existence. Conventional urban fantasy, this is not. The writing is quite good at capturing the feel and character of the South, though, and I enjoyed the character study of the Minotaur, called "M" by others, who yearns for connection, or at least a place in the world, but doesn't know how to fit in. He becomes, variously, an observer of human nature, a sounding board for other people's feelings and worries, an object of antagonism, and a lover.

Princess Luna's earliest memory is a sweet gentle voice who may or may not be her mother. The next is of her and Celestia as children being found and raised by a foster family. This is because they don't have parents. They were newly created by Harmony when they were found. So in reality, she has No Infantile Amnesia. Princess Celestia: That is only one truth Twilight, one version, and even I can't remember anymore how accurate it is. So much has been repaired and revised since then. I sometimes remember it as you've seen in that reenactment. Other times I remember it just being me and Lulu, Discord gone, and me a naive little goddess thinking that without her parents baring down on her, not there to help her, guide her, that maybe at least she could make a land where everyone was happy no matter what. A point of Glasshouse. Immortality means that humans need to periodically erase their memories to make things more interesting. The protagonist has just done this when the book begins.

Cecie keeps telling him she’d like to take him home some night, husband or no. The Minotaur waits hopefully. Husband or no. Horde Prime of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has lived for such a long time that he has trouble remembering it all. When he needs to recall details about a bygone era—such as the days of the First Ones—he has to access the memories of his former vessels from their preserved bodies. Even M’s bullish half is capable of empathy and despair. He certainly recognizes the cannibalistic nature of becoming his employer’s new beef carver and his emotional reaction to a televised bullfight – one of the few times he deigns to use the contraption, as ancient M “feels hostile toward most things electronic.... There is a threat in the very existence of such minute and exact circuitry that touches something primal in the Minotaur” – is terrible to consider in its personal relevance. As readers we are not privy to how this occurs except that over the millenia he becomes more humanized but still with the head of a bull. He is a lovely creature and works as a chef in a diner where the food is very very good.Some splatbooks say this also happens for liches. A lich may be so focused on his eternal pursuit of magical knowledge that it forgets its own mortal life. Sometimes the key to defeating one is learning its mortal name.

Louis in Interview with the Vampire laments that he can remember the last sunrise he ever saw on the day he was turned in all its vivid detail, but can't seem to remember any sunrise before it. The Minotaur is so un-minotaur like it is unbelievable. His hips and legs are as skinny as a girl. Even obese people have large legs and hips, from carry the load of there upper body. He has no balls. A bull with no balls. He is one sad bull and you will be sad if you expect too much from this.M, as he’s currently known, lives on the periphery of society and works as a chef in the kitchen of the Grub’s Rib restaurant. His life is full of sadness and there is a yearning that he can gain some acceptance into society. M has a quiet, reclusive, smouldering character that cloaks a history and capability that can administer destruction and damage. How will he respond to his current threats and trials? It's easy to build empathy for him and when he starts to develop a friendship with a woman, you become absorbed in his activities and personally encouraging him to take the steps forward.
