The coffee was wonderfully smooth, with an intense flavor. Thanks to the ability to use the portafilter naked, where the spout is removed so the bottom of the basket is exposed, the coffee also had a complete crema on top. When we added sugar and gave the drink a stir, the crema formed again, which is exactly as we’d hoped. After a few attempts, we were achieving gorgeously smooth, rich cremas with every shot, thanks to those 18 bars of pressure forcing hot water through the coffee grinds. Its height is only 14.3 cm (5.6 in) and allows you to grind 20 grams of coffee, therefore more than enough to prepare a pour-over or a double espresso. Wacaco suggests you pump boiling water through the espresso maker and into your cup before brewing your espresso; including this step resulted in it taking 90 seconds to brew a shot of espresso. While this may seem long in comparison to powered espresso makers – the Breville Bambino Plus takes just 21 seconds, for example – it's certainly worth the wait. The setup for the Wacaco Minipresso NS isn’t difficult, but it takes some time to get familiar with the parts and understand the espresso-making process. It’s not your typical espresso machine, which is why I needed to spend extra time reading through the manual. There were plenty of diagrams in the instructions that made it fairly easy to follow. There were no first-time use instructions, so after I rinsed all of the parts, I just assumed it was ready to go. It’s important to note the Wacaco Minipresso NS requires the original Nespresso capsules.
