On 5th December 2014 Scotland lowered its drink drive limit from 0.80‰BAC (80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood) to 0.50‰BAC (50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood), England, Wales and Northern Ireland stay at 0.80‰BAC. AlcoSense shows you a reading of your alcohol level so you can use the Scottish or English version of the product in either territory. The Scottish version displays a ‘Don’t Drive’ alert from 0.30‰BAC upward and the English/Welsh version from 0.6‰BAC upwards. I then tried it one evening after a couple of drinks and wine with dinner - a time I would never have driven but wanted to see what it said - and as expected it showed me over the limit. So then I did a morning after test a couple of times after a night when I had drunk moderately heavily and was happily surprised to get a 'Lo' reading. I did a further test one morning after a few nights of drinking to see if there was a cumulative effect, and this time got a yellow reading, but below even the Scottish limit. Most issues while doing a breath test are caused by either blowing too hard, too soft or not for long enough, and with some products this can also cause inaccurate results. The AlcoSense Elite won the group test, with the AlcoSense Lite finishing runner up. At the reference reading of 50mg/100ml of alcohol in blood the AlcoSense Elite exactly matched the Lion 500 Police Breathalyzer and after expetensive testing concluded: The AlcoSense Lite has an ASC feature, manually selected by the user, which is a deep clean of the sensor and should be undertaken periodically to remove containment like residual alcohol and oxidisation from the sensor. If you intend to use your system regularly we would suggest considering the AlcoSense Elite which automatically self cleans after every blow test. For a deeper clean AlcoSense™ Elite also has a feature called ASC (Auto Sensor Clean) which is designed to be used every now and again to give the unit a ‘spring clean', again ensuring that the unit reads to the highest levels of accuracy. Recalibration reminder - Breathalysers, whether for Police use or otherwise, require periodic calibration to maintain accuracy.
