Description

The Lunar Solar has a large (8 ½ sq. ft.) usable vestibule. There is sufficient vestibule space for gear. In good conditions, the vestibule can be completely rolled up allowing surrounding views and improved ventilation. Side Entry For true ultralight aficionados and die-hard thru-hikers, no form of shelter burdens you less than a tarp. While we only tested two stand-alone tarps in this year's review, the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Square Flat Tarp is by far the most protective. The perfectly square design allows for endless adaptability when it comes to pitching options and locations. At only 10.9 ounces, including copious amounts of tie-out cordage, this tarp is the lightest shelter in this review. If you don't like carrying a lot of weight and you're willing to skimp on the comforts of a traditional fully covered shelter, this ultra-bomber and a durable tarp is our best recommendation. The Big Agnes Tiger Wall is a semi-freestanding, three-season tent with an easy breezy weight of just over two pounds. When the weather gets wet, I prefer car camping for 100% assurance of staying dry. Failing this, however, you need a durable tent specifically designed to handle rain. Behold, the MSR Hubba Hubba 1.

Minimize the effect of the wind. As described above, the wind can be a problem for this tent. By minimizing the effect of the wind you’ll sleep better at night and you may even get away with no face slaps from the fly. You can minimize the wind effect by being rational about where you’re pitching Lunar Solo, getting the right pitch, and using guidelines. The key advantage of the tent to me is the weight vs price ratio vs durability. These are phenomenal and to my knowledge, it’s one of the best values, if not the best, at the market. 740g for a quality tent from a renowned US manufacturer that protects me from sandflies, mosquitos and light rain is exceptionally good. I’ve been using the tent here in New Zealand for a couple of years now and even if I think that it’s a great tent, when wind or rain is expected for my weekend adventures, I opt-in for another tent from my collection.

Pitching

The Hubba Hubba minimizes this problem with enough mesh on the inner tent to make it breathable while avoiding significant leaks. The waterproof rating was a tad low on The One. Both the body and floor were 1800mm, 10D ripstop nylon. There’s a zipper that connects the two half-front doors, which you close above the front guyline. Each door has a small webbing loop at its base which you can connect to a prusik knot that travels along the front guyline. This lets you tension the doors down or up, or connect one to the guyline and not the other. The hexagonal, 26 square feet of interior space and 49-inch peak height exceed those measures in some solo shelters. But because it pitches using a single pole, the walls all slope downward from the peak, limiting headroom and living space inside. By comparison, the Gossamer Gear The One ultralight solo tent pitches with two trekking poles, creating more headroom and nice livability, even though its actual dimensions and peak height are less than the Lunar Solo’s. The Skyscape Trekker has a very well-designed floating bathtub floor. I have found that the bathtub floor pitches perfectly every time. The floor “floats,” reducing stress on the materials and minimizing punctures. I have never had a puncture despite not using a ground sheet. SMD sells a lightweight polypro groundsheet for those who want extra protection. Peak Height

You need at least 6 stakes to pitch it plus additional 2 stakes for guidelines if you want to use them The Skyscape Scout is a fantastic option between a tarp and a tent. The hybrid design gives you plenty of space, a good level of protection and all at a relatively low weight. This is an absolute bargain for anyone looking for a different shelter to get out and explore in.The Lunar Solo's distinctive low hexagonal shape easily spills the wind no matter the direction. Short, steeply sloped sides, handle snow or high winds with ease. A generous canopy covers a 26 sq. ft. sleeping area plus 8.5 sq. ft. of vestibule storage. The 48" peak height, set in the middle of the tent maximizes room for sitting and taking care of chores. The North Face Stormbreak 1 is one of the best one-person tents for hot weather because half of its body is mesh. You can sleep comfortably on clear summer nights with maximum ventilation.

Six Moon Designs was one of the first tent manufacturers to convert from silnylon to a 100% silicone-coated polyester material (silpoly). The Lunar Solo has been manufactured with silpoly since 2019. The Silpoly used by SMD has a hydrostatic head of 3,000mm, which means that the fabric can withstand a 3-meter column of water; 1,400mm is the minimum to be considered waterproof. We recommend tents be a minimum of 2,000mm. The Skyscape Trekker can be set up in minutes (with a little practice). Only five stakes are required. The double doors on either side of the shelter have the benefit of allowing the tent to be set up in “tight” locations. The adjustable tension cords make it easy to get a taut pitch. Durability I get it, the strategy one is supposed to have with regard to a single-wall tent is that condensation should be headed off before it ever accumulates. This can have to do with big picture considerations like whether you’re camping in humid environments and precisely where you decide to pitch, to more micro habits, like whether you’ve taken a lot of wet gear inside. The main defense is that well-designed tents provide for substantial ventilation.

With 26 square feet of floor space and 48 inches of headroom, this tent is palatial for one person. A tall hiker should be able to stretch out comfortably in this tent with all their gear inside and sit up straight without brushing the ceiling. It’s also wide enough that those who hike with their dogs may find they can sleep comfortably with their best friends beside them in the Lunar Solo. The vestibule offers an additional 8.5 square feet of storage space for gear best left outside.
