Description

Rand and the Aiel, together with Mat, Egwene, Moiraine and Lan go directly to the Waste using a Portal Stone, which Rand requires an angreal to use. They arrive next to a city - Rhuidean. Mat is the only son and eldest child of Abell (born 955 NE) and Natti Cauthon (born 956 NE). He has two younger sisters, Bodewhin Cauthon (born 983 NE) and Eldrin Cauthon (born 984 NE). [3] [4]

Thom and Juilin stayed with Mat after the Seanchan captured Ebou Dar and Mat was injured, during which time he schemed with Beslan Mitsobar against the Seanchan. He also used the excuse of playing the harp to sneak into the room of one of Tylin Quintara Mitsobar's maids. He helped Mat escape with Tuon. Rand, Mat, Egwene, Moiraine, and Lan arrive at Rhuidean, along with Egwene’s friend Aviendha. All but Egwene and Lan head down to the city, where Mat finds another doorframe ter’angreal, and Rand enters a series of glass columns. Rand learns the history of the Aiel; that they were once servants to the Aes Sedai, sworn to peace in battle. Mat attempts to ask more questions inside the ter’angreal, but accidentally makes a bargain instead. Egwene begins her training as a dreamwalker. Now Rosamund Pike, who is playing the character of Moiraine , has got in on the “Wheel of Time is great for women” act, telling the Radio Times that she’s received letters from fans of the books and “many of them have said that actually these women in The Wheel of Time were mentors and role models for them growing up, which I thought was very interesting.” I have been lukewarm at best about most of the series so far, as Jordan's penchant for exhaustive repetition is nothing short of maddening, but in this book he manages to drop it (along with the omnipresent adolescent angst that manages to overshadow every significant event by burying it under a mountain of triviality) long enough to achieve a few moments with some genuine emotional resonance. To avoid posting any spoilers, I will refrain from specifics, but the most poignant are the moments of history that Rand views, and they succeed where so many other efforts by Jordan fail because he--probably unintentionally--drops his usual writing devices and gets out of the way to simply narrate the events for us. The contrast between this part and most of the rest of the series is really amazing, and shows just how strongly we can feel the emotions of the moment without having to have it spelled out repeatedly for us both before and afterward. It's unfortunate that Jordan seems to trust the intelligence of his readers so little.

Interestingly, Gil-galad is also the name of a legendary elven king in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series, and the word "galad" also means "light" in the fictional Elvish language Sindarin. At the beginning of the series, he's known to try whatever he can to shirk responsibility and work. For example, when he first discovered his ta'veren nature, he attempts to avoid his role in the Pattern, and only reluctantly accepts what he needs to do. He is all the while steadfast and loyal, and has learned over time not to shirk from his duties, no matter how much he might grumble about it.

An interesting example of this would be using a blast spark on Shadow Gun, giving it a striking resemblance to Duelist Dash (and by extension, Cero Metralleta from Bleach). Siuan and Leane are both "stilled" (their ability to channel the One Power prevented) and Elaida becomes the next Amyrlin. Chapter 38 has four points of view, two of which are from Egeanin Tamarath's POV. Both points of view are 23% each. In Tar Valon, Siuan Sanche is deposed and stilled by Elaida Sedai, then tortured for information. With some incidental help from Gawyn, Min frees Siuan and her former Keeper Leane; they team up with the Gentled Logain and head south. Egwene and Elayne visit Rand and discuss the differences between saidar and saidin. Egwene tells Rand she is no longer in love with him.

The female sorcerers in the series are called Aes Sedai – a sort of Bene Gesserit-like organisation of which Pike’s character Moiraine is a member. Moiraine, who is actually one of Jordan’s better characters, is looking for the Dragon Reborn, a reincarnation of the male sorcerer who took on Shai’tan generations earlier. She believes he is one of three teenage boys living in the small village of Emond’s Field.

During his escape from Ebou Dar, together with Thom, Egeanin, and Bayle Domon, he meets Tuon, a Seanchan High Lady. When Egeanin names her Daughter of the Nine Moons, the woman he knew he was fated to marry, he could not leave her behind. He named her his wife three times, unknowingly completing half of the Seanchan marriage ceremony. In past updates the selection icon for Shadowcast had the same art as Flamecharm, but was oddly tinted white.

Rand uses a Portal Stone to transport Mat, Egwene, Moiraine, and the Aiel at the Stone of Tear from Tear to the Aiel Waste, where Taardad and Shaido Aiel are waiting for them. The Aiel Wise Ones have Moiraine, Aviendha, and Rand enter Rhuidean, and allow Mat to go with Rand. All three enter ter'angreal in Rhuidean. When Moiraine comes out, she has some knowledge of the future. Rand comes out with dragon markings on both arms, proving him to be He Who Comes With the Dawn, the Car'a'carn, the Chief of Chiefs of all the Aiel. Mat goes into a doorway ter'angreal which leads him to the land of the Eelfinn. He comes out with the gaps in his memory filled with those of men long dead, which also grant him fluency in the Old Tongue. He was also gifted with a spear called an ashandarei and a medallion ter'angreal that protects against the One Power. Rand finds that Mat had been hanged from the Tree of Life, but Rand was able to revive Mat. Mat generally thinks of the Seanchan overall as an insane people. He views Selucia as a nuisance in his pursuit of Tuon, referring to her as Tuon's "shadow", although she does later spare his life after initially mistaking him for an intruder and helps him to reach Tuon secretly. As the prince-consort of the Senchan heir and later the Empress, Mat becomes known amongst the Seanchan as the Prince of the Ravens, and after working with them, he develops a grudging respect for some of the Seanchan generals, especially Furyk Karede.
