As if the 65C845K hasn’t already done enough to look insanely good value, its pictures are also for the most part exceptionally crisp and detailed. This is every inch a 4K experience, and one that holds up reasonably if not spectacularly well, when there’s lots of motion in a scene. Provided, anyway, you’ve toned down the TV’s motion processing system from its messy, unnatural looking default 10 level to its slightly juddery but overall cleaner and more cinematic three or four level. The results of this combination of brightness and contrast contribute to far and away the most cinematic and high-end feeling image I’ve seen from a UK TCL TV, and actually the most aggressive HDR-friendly image I’ve seen from any TV at its price point. The TCL C64 Series hits UK shelves soon, with a release scheduled for later this month. However, TCL has included its Game Accelerator processing to boost content to 120Hz; obviously, this won't look quite as good as real 120Hz, and it only works at 1080p resolution, but it should keep gamers on a budget happy. It also includes Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, as well as HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG formats. Dolby Vision material, however, will trigger TCL’s Dolby Vision modes, four in all, but with Dolby Vision IQ the default; this senses the ambient light conditions and moves to Dolby Vision ‘dark’ if you are in a dark room and Dolby Vision ‘bright’ if you are in a very bright room.

The C81 QLED’s bright approach also helps it retain plenty of shadow detail for the most part (with SDR as well as HDR images), except in instances that the clouding is severe enough to obscure a few things.

The video upscaling and processing are also impressive, with the C845 upscaling lower resolution content with skill and precision to match its 4K panel, while the processing helps to minimise any unwanted artefacts in heavily compressed streaming material or low-quality digital TV channels. The HDR app support is particularly fulsome on the C81 QLED, thanks to its support of the HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR formats alongside the more standard HDR10 and HLG formats. So no matter what HDR format a particular streaming service uses, the C81 QLED will be able to take full advantage of it. OLED screens with their self-emissive pixels can deliver local contrast more effectively than any LED TV. The 65C845K’s 576 local dimming zones, however, manage to control where its blinding light goes much more successfully than you’d have thought possible for its price point. When it comes to upscaling HD sources to 4K, the C81 QLED delivers pretty solid results. Noise is gently massaged away without leaving the picture looking processed, although the results look more like good HD than 4K.Motion is very good for 24fps content as correct pulldown is applied with Motion switched off. 50 Hz broadcast is also good with no major issues of dropped frames or micro stutter spotted. You can apply frame interpolation which introduces plenty of soap opera effect and artefacts around fast-moving objects.
