Description

The Wearable Beanbag was created by Takikou Sewing, a company in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, that specialises in beanbags, or “bead cushions” as they’re known in Japan. What do you think? Would you like to make your own DIY wrist pincushion? Let me know in the comments below! – Mike. Is it weird that I’m kinda obsessed with my new DIY wrist pincushion? It’s very satisfying to wear… it makes me feel like a professional haha! I especially love that the wire wool will help keep my pins sharp, so they’ll last much longer. And I’ve finally got a solution to my messy sewing desk problem! Win-win! 🙂 According to the company, the product was designed around the idea of a cushion that ruins people, a concept that’s become popular in recent years, where designers seek to provide customers with comfort levels so supreme they won’t ever want to move, leading to their ultimate ruin. Finally, stitch the slit closed. You’ll need to do this the traditional way: with a needle and thread! Use a hidden ladder stitch (or similar) for the best result.

To begin, you need to cut out two circles and one long rectangle from your fabric. The circles should be approximately 10cm in diameter. The rectangle should measure 35cm by 6cm. This concept was born out of the idea of a cushion that would allow you to totally let go, any time, anywhere. You can put this on and chill out in your living room, or loads of other places, that’s why we created it,” Takikou’s Shogo Takikawa said. In this day and age, there should be a way for all these things to be done in one swift movement, and that’s exactly what’s now possible, thanks to a new product called the “ Wearable Beanbag“. While the product was introduced to the market earlier this year, it remained under the radar until a recent tweet sent it viral, leading it to be featured on morning TV programs, where people fell in love with the genius idea.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from over a decade of sewing, it’s that sewing is messy. As much as I like to think I’m super organised, that all goes downhill when the sewing machine comes out. Loose threads and fabric scraps fly everywhere, pins scatter over my table and bobbins roll around everywhere… it’s creative chaos! The Wearable Beanbag comes in three sizes so parents and children can swap their matching pyjamas for matching beanbags instead. The beanbag is designed to be worn like a dress but the adult version does weigh around five kilos (11 pounds), so you can use it as a regular beanbag as well. The activity cushion Vicair AllRounder O2 is available in three sizes: small, medium and large and has an average weight of only 800 grams.

Suntory announces massive price spike for Japanese whisky, some types more than double in price 3 views Stuff the wrist pincushion with wire wool. I’d definitely recommend wearing a safety mask and gloves here, as the wire wool creates a lot of dust that you do not want to be inhaling. If you can do this step outside, that’s even better. The time P.K. flatly refused a request from his deceased best friend’s mom at their first meeting 7 views You’ll now have two separate pieces: one circle with elastic joined, and one circle with the rectangle joined. The next step is to join these two pieces together. Simply pin the other long edge of the rectangle piece to the circle with the elastic on it. This is very similar to how you joined the first long edge of the rectangle in the previous steps. The main thing to remember here is to ensure the elastic strip is captured inside the two circles! This is because we’ll turn the DIY wrist pincushion inside out in a moment, which will reveal the elastic strip on the outside – ready to wear on your wrist. With the rectangular piece now sewed onto the circular piece, you’ll be left with a small opening/slit on one side. Line these edges up neatly, pin in place and stitch together. DO NOT stitch the entire slit close – just the very top part, as you can see in my photos. This is because we will use this slit to stuff the pin cushion later on! The Vicair AllRounder O2 has really made it possible for me to go through life a bit more carefree again.”– Julia van der Sprong Ta-dah! I designed this wrist pincushion, with an elasticated strap. No excuse not to use it! And the best bit? It’s stuffed with wire wool, so it will sharpen your pins as you use it! How cool is that?

Despite many loving the item, there were a few who had some issues. One shopper said: “This blanket does the job to keep you warm, and it feels soft and cosy, but the quality of the material isn't the best. It transfers a lot of fluff on to pretty much everything.” But if you like the look of the blanket but don’t want to spend too much money, Matalan has exactly the same blanket but at a cheaper price in their sale. Hi Cheryl! Thanks for pointing this out. The toy stuffing was an error on my part. I had originally planned to use a blend of toy stuffing/wadding and wire wool, but I ended up only using the wire wool. My bad! I’ve deleted that from the supplies list now. The beanbag is easy to get into — simply make sure the front tag is at the front when you pull it over your head, and then you can enjoy the beanbag life all day long. To remove, simply pull your hands inside and push it up over your head from the bottom. Japan is famous for being a land of convenience, so when you want to stay warm and sit down for extended periods of time, who can be bothered to go to the effort of pulling out a chair and wrapping a blanket around yourself?

Using your sewing machine, sew the elastic to the fabric circle (remove the pins as you go). I used my Singer 7285Q Patchwork for this, which has the option for zig-zag stitches. This is perfect for sewing elastic, as the zig-zag stitch will stretch with the elastic – meaning it won’t snap if you over-stretch it. Simply plop yourself down and you’ve got cushioned comfort all around, allowing you to play video games or scroll through your phone for hours on end.

Take your other fabric circle and the long rectangle of fabric you cut out earlier. Pin the long side of the rectangle to the curved edge of the circle. When you’ve gone all the way round the circle and the two ends of the rectangle meet, fold the ends outwards (not inwards!). This DIY wrist pincushion post is sponsored by Singer, as part of my brand ambassadorship with them. However, all words and opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that keep me blogging!

Take one of your fabric circles and place it face side down on your table. Carefully pin the two ends of your elastic strap to the very centre of the fabric circle. Make sure the ends neatly line up, to form the wrist strap shape. Available in three different sizes and various colors, the wearable beanbag is easy to get in and out of, making it ideal for use virtually anytime, anywhere. One thing you need to keep in mind is that the adult version weighs around 5 kilograms (11 pounds), so it’s a bit heavier than your regular garments. The Vicair AllRounder O2 is filled with the tetrahedron shaped SmartCells to offer skin protection and comfort. When it comes to pin cushions, it’s what’s on the inside that counts the most. The filling, after all, is what keeps pins in place, keeps the cushion steady, and can even keep pins clean and sharp. The most common pin cushion filling is polyester, as it is pliable enough to place and remove pins without much issue, yet structured enough to secure them. It is, however, a lighter material, so it may cause your pin cushion to slip or fall off the table easily.
