Benadryl is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Benadryl is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, itching, and other cold or allergy symptoms. Benadryl may cause blurred vision and may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly. Double blind controlled clinical trials comparing cetirizine to placebo or other antihistamines at the recommended dosage (10 mg daily for cetirizine), of which quantified safety data are available, included more than 3200 subjects exposed to cetirizine. Antihistamines may oppose the effect of histamine (used to treat leukaemia) and are not recommended for people having this treatment. Antihistamines may also oppose the effect of betahistine (used to treat Ménière's disease) so this medicine is probably best avoided if you're taking betahistine.

Seek advice before using if you are breast feeding, pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suffer from allergies. Women who are breastfeeding. Small amounts of cetirizine pass into breast milk, so if you're breastfeeding you should only take this medicine on the advice of your doctor. Since Benadryl is used when needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are on a schedule, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Undesirable effects are described according to MedDRA System Organ Class and by estimated frequency based on the post-marketing experience. The extent of absorption of cetirizine is not reduced with food, although the rate of absorption is decreased. The extent of bioavailability is similar when cetirizine is given as solutions, capsules or tablets.

Although cetirizine is a non-sedating antihistamine, occasionally some people may find it makes them feel slightly sleepy. Make sure you know how this medicine affects you before doing potentially hazardous activities such as driving or operating machines. If you do find this medicine makes you sleepy you should avoid drinking alcohol or using other medicines that cause drowsiness with it, as this could make any sleepiness or reduced alertness worse. In most people Benadryl Allergy Relief does not cause drowsiness. However, there are rare exceptions and you should take care when you use this product for the first time. If this product makes you feel drowsy, do not drive or operate machinery. Benadryl Allergy Relief should not be taken whilst under the influence of alcohol.Patients with both liver and kidney disease should consult a physician before use. The physician should determine if a different dose is needed.
