During that period of downtime, the Stones Roses were beset with a whole range of “issues”, collectively and individually, but the sense of expectation from fans and critics alike became perhaps the biggest problem of all. I guess the great shame is that this one was not only their follow-up, but it was also their swansong. Second Coming was never a particularly accessible album. Breaking Into Heaven takes four-and-a-half minutes of tribal drumming, swampy atmospherics and occasional blasts of guitar before it actually gets going. When it does it is a groove-laden blues opus, complete with extensive solos (yes, plural), highlighting all the practice that John Squire put in while the Roses were spending five years in legal wrangles with their previous record company.Offiziellecharts.de – The Stone Roses – Second Coming" (in German). Fools Gold' was so different - and presumably for the musicians involved so liberating - that they would never again sound the same as on their debut. (Or, at least, only briefly, and with such apparent effort as to render the results problematic at best.) The song has been eulogised extensively so there's no need to go into it in too much detail here, save for the important bit that often gets forgotten: it's a hip-hop record. Sonically, it's about locating the heart of the riff, looping it and intensifying it through repetition, then playing with its layers. Electronic dance music tends to do this in neat and resolved measures, allowing the patterns to play for a set number of bars before adding another element or two, then maybe taking something else out (cf 'Blue Monday' - and in the case of records that great, this clearly isn't meant to imply any criticism). The basic guitar sound is dead easy really. All you need is a '59 Les Paul guitar, a nice old Fender Twin amp that's been hot‑wired, and a Shure SM57 and Sennheiser 421 to mic up each speaker. You send it through a dbx160 compressor, and then straight into the desk. Oh, and you need someone who can play, of course! One label who could see the potential of The Stone Roses was the American-owned Geffen imprint, who were rumoured to be offering the band a huge sum. Stone Roses reunion: where have they been?". Squire wrote nearly everything on œThe Second Coming. It’s never easy singing someone else’s lyrics, Brown when pressed on this said that. Made of Stone" originally charted at 90 on the UK Singles Chart, however it did reach 20 when reissued in 1990.
