About this deal

EPIC MULTIPLAYER BATTLES—Commander is a multiplayer way to play Magic, an epic, free-for-all battle full of strategic plays and social intrigue

These four variant scene cards are included only in the Bundle and Bundle: Gift Edition (plus non-foil versions in Collector Boosters) and depict the pivotal moment before the One Ring was destroyed. You can see this scene in a two-by-two card grid, but other scenes exist in a range of grids all the way up to six by three cards—worthy of showing an epic scene! The card is insanely strong, but that’s thankfully balanced by the fact that it costs a whooping eight mana. But for that mana you get a 9/9 with trample, and it has an additional effect that utilizes the Ring tempts you mechanic. The Monarch for Aragorn, King of Gondor; Archivist of Gondor; Champions of Minas Tirith; Court of Ire; Crown of Gondor; Denethor, Stone Seer; Éomer, King of Rohan; Faramir, Steward of Gondor; Fealty to the Realm; Forth Eorlingas!; Oath of Eorl; Palace Jailer and Throne of the High City. The final commander, Erestor is a payoff for all the voting cards. It’s apparently quite persuasive character, as opponents are more likely to vote for your choice, if it’s in the play. Pippin, Warden of Isengard can be especially useful thanks to its two abilities. Being able to create a Food token at any time makes it so that you can get them during your opponents’ turns, which would cause Merry, Warden of Isengard to trigger during that turn, somewhat bypassing its “this ability triggers only once each turn” rule. The second ability on Pippin can also be a massive game ender if you have enough creatures on the field.I’ve been a huge fan of Lord of the Rings for like the last 20 years. It’s the thing that sparked my undying love for medieval-style fantasy, and what better entry point than one of the best examples of it? Even as a kid I’d already watched the Ralph Bakshi movie several times just to find new ways to immerse myself into that world.

Scenes range from two by two cards, as seen above, up to six by three cards—an epic 18 cards to show an epic scene at that scale—and there are seven total scenes available in June, five of which appear in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Draft and Set Boosters, with all seven appearing in Collector Boosters. (The scene above is available in Bundle and Bundle: Gift Edition as well as Collector Boosters and gives you a taste of what to expect.)
