Classic Gray by Minwax is my favorite gray toned stain on oak! This is a great option if you want to take oak wood and transform it to have more of a cool tone to it. Update the hardware: Swapping outdated hardware with sleek, modern options can give your oak furniture or cabinets an instant modern update. Opacity refers to how much underlying wood grain you can see through the dry stain. Paint, for example, is completely opaque, meaning you cannot see through it at all. Wood stains are generally semi-transparent, meaning that you can see the wood grain through the stain once it’s dry. Jan Walter, a professional painter and owner of the blog Gocolorize, comments, “A stain is better to use when you want to preserve the grain of the wood and show off its natural beauty. A stain will enhance the natural look of the wood, while paint will coat and hide the grain of the wood.” I always prefer to apply wood stain with a lint-free cloth. This allows you to control the amount of stain applied (I prefer thin coats) and there are no brush strokes or marks left behind.

If the wood was already treated, you must strip the existing finish first. You can use a chemical stripper to get through it faster. However, if it’s greasy or discolored, clean it with a special wood cleaner, rinse well, and let it dry completely. After staining the wood, it should be finished with a varnish, oil or wax. The Wood Stain is colourfast once dry but by applying a finish you can: Our Wood Stain can be used to restore or change the colour of all types of interior and exterior wood. It can be used to stain old wood, as well as brand new wood and is easy and simple to use. Go for a minimalist look: Pairing oak with clean, simple lines and minimal accessories can balance out the heaviness of the oak and make it look more modern. Applying a wood conditioner: Applying a wood conditioner before staining can help the wood absorb more stain, creating a darker finish. This is especially useful for woods that are difficult to stain, such as maple or pine.If you compare the oak stained with Weathered Oak to that just rubbed with walrus oil (pretty close to raw wood look), you can see that weathered oak slightly deepens the color of the wood and increases the contrast between the lightest and darkest parts of the wood grain. Diluting the stain: One way to lighten the color of the stain is to dilute it with water or mineral spirits. This will reduce the concentration of the stain and make it lighter when applied to the wood. My biggest problem with staining oak is that it is gorgeous to begin with! I prefer a very transparent stain that lets the gorgeous wood grain show through. Is it better to stain wood with a brush or rag? As previously mentioned, our Wood Stains are water-based so can be diluted to achieve a lighter shade, or you can mix our Natural Oak and Dark Oak Wood Stains together until you achieve the colour you desire. Test the Oak Wood Stain First

Not to compare it to child’s play, but its ability to absorb stains uniformly across the surface is incredibly satisfying. New Wood – Needs to be sanded first to create a lovely smooth finish prior to applying the Wood Stain. Sand first with 120g sandpaper, then with a #60 Coarse Sanding Pad (240g sandpaper), and again with #100 Fine Sanding Pad (320g sandpaper). This process will help even out the surface, creating a lovely smooth finish for the stain to absorb into. When choosing a stain color for your oak floors, think carefully about the aesthetic that you prefer. Do you want a light, bright look or something darker? Do you prefer something with cool gray tones or a warm look? Any of the below stain colors could work wonderfully, depending on your desired look. The best stain colors for oak

Apply Evenly: Whether using a brush, cloth, or applicator pad, it's essential to apply the stain evenly, following the grain of the wood. Avoid leaving puddles or uneven patches, resulting in an inconsistent finish. On the downside, you’ll need mineral spirits to thin oil-based stains and to clean brushes or mop up spills. These stains can have a powerful odor, and most emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are chemicals that “off-gas” into the surrounding air and can irritate the lungs, eyes, and throat, as well as harm the environment. Many states, including California, New York, and Ohio, only permit oil-based stains specifically formulated to produce low-VOC emissions. It’s best to apply oil-based stains outdoors when possible, and if not, maintain as much airflow as possible in the room where you are working.
