Description

Honey significantly reduced bothersome cough by about 2 points on a 7‑point Likert scale compared with placebo (moderate quality evidence), but not compared with no treatment or dextromethorphan (low quality evidence).

Liver problems including hepatitis have been reported when taking this product. However, a causal relationship has not been established. The frequency is not known. If you become unwell (yellowing eyes/skin, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, loss of appetite), stop taking immediately and seek medical advice.Viral acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are the most prevalent diseases in primary care, regardless of patient age and sex [ 1-3]. In ARTIs such as acute bronchitis (AB) and the common cold (CC), cough is a leading symptom [ 4], causing over 50% of new patient attendance in primary care and being the major source of consultation in pharmacies [ 5-7]. The authors concluded that Pelargonium may be effective in treating symptoms of acute rhinosinusitis and the common cold. Doubt existed because in some trials treatment wasn’t started until the infection was in full swing – it is most effective if you start taking it as soon as possible after symptoms start. I always keep Pelargonium in the first aid cupboard to treat the first signs of a cold. However, due to the potential effect of Kaloba on coagulation parameters, this product may enhance the effect of coagulation-inhibiting drugs such as warfarin and should not be taken concomitantly with these drugs. (see section 4.3). 4.6 Pregnancy and lactation

Macrolides should be used with caution in people with a predisposition to QT interval prolongation. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhoea are the most common side effects of macrolides. These are less frequent with clarithromycin than with erythromycin ( BNF, December 2018). Corticosteroids have well-recognised systemic (mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid) effects, including a range of psychological or behavioural effects (particularly in children) and the committee agreed that, weighing up the potential risks and benefits, oral or inhaled corticosteroids should not be offered for people (adults or children) with an acute cough (including acute bronchitis). Liver problems including hepatitis have been reported when taking this product. However, a causal relationship has not been established. The frequency is not known. After taking this product A. Fever, diarrhoea, restlessness, dark coloured urine, fatigue and stomach disturbances are some common side effects. However, due to insufficient research, some individuals like pregnant mothers, lactating mothers and even children should refrain from its consumption. Q. How can you use geranium oil?

Coughing is a leading symptom of viral ARTIs such as AB and CC which may have an annoying and grueling effect on children and adults alike, causing interference with essential activities of daily living and disruption of sleep in patients and their nuclear families [ 5, 16, 17]. In ARTIs, cough may persist for several weeks, causing persistent distress and reduced well-being [ 16, 52]. It is therefore a clinically important treatment target. Honey significantly reduced the frequency and severity of cough at 1 day follow-up compared with placebo, no treatment or an antihistamine (diphenhydramine) by about 0.5 to 2 points on a carer‑reported 7-point Likert scale in children and young people with an acute cough caused by an upper respiratory tract infection (low to moderate quality evidence). Carer responses about cough symptoms ranged from 'extremely' (6 points) to 'not at all' (0 points), but it was not clear how these responses were defined.

In single cases, signs indicating disturbances of liver function have been reported after the intake of Kaloba; the causal relationship between this effect and the use of the product has not been demonstrated. The systematic review of over-the-counter cough medicines did not include evidence specifically on pholcodine. However, the committee recognised that a RCT comparing pholcodine with dextromethorphan is available. One of the most captivating herbal aid of Pelargonium sidoides has been curing tuberculosis, which eventually led to its foundation in the late 1890s in Europe. 6. Used in Ethnoveterinary Applications The committee agreed that because the evidence of benefit of doxycycline over amoxicillin, clarithromycin or erythromycin is limited, these antibiotics should be offered as alternative first choices. This also reflects concerns that doxycycline is contraindicated in pregnancy, and this should be considered when choosing antibiotics for women of childbearing age.It holds a coumarin compound that acts as a blood thinner, an anticoagulant. Therefore, you should refrain from taking it if you are on prescription anticoagulants like warfarin, etc. It may result in excessive bleeding. For the same reason, you should stop consuming pelargonium sidoides at least two weeks before a dental procedure or surgery.

The roots of Pelargonium sidoides are soaked in water to obtain an extract for oral administration that is used as a cure for dysentery in cattle. 7. Pelargonium Sidoides Contains Healthy Metabolites In the studies, honey was given as a single 10‑g dose in 1 trial, and 2 trials reported that honey was given before bedtime. A range of types of honey were used, with no studies using the same variety. A. In the case of geranium essential oil, you can dilute it with a carrier oil like sesame oil and apply it to the skin. It works well for spot treatments, itchy skins, acne. In addition, you can use it as a massage oil. However, some carrier oils cause an allergic reaction. Therefore, you should ensure that the carrier oil you’re using suits your skin. Q. Do Pelargonium sidoides help in treating common colds? Main results for change in cough intensity between baseline and day 7 are presented in Figure 3. In each trial analyzed individually as well as in the meta-analysis, where a point estimate for the treatment group difference of 0.89 points was observed, patients treated with EPs 7630 showed a significantly more pronounced reduction in the cough intensity score than those in the placebo group. No important heterogeneity of results was observed (I 2=13%). In the pooled data set in adults with AB from all trials, 331/373 (88.7%) patients treated with EPs 7630 and 129/271 (47.6%) patients in the placebo group showed a reduction of cough intensity by at least 50% compared to baseline (meta-analysis RR, EPs 7630 / placebo: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.37, 3.31) while 97/373 (26.0%) and 17/271 (6.3%) did not cough any more at day 7 (RR: 5.00; 95% CI: 3.10, 8.07).Paul IM, Yoder KE, Crowell KR, et al. Effect of dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine, and placebo on nocturnal cough and sleep quality for coughing children and their parents. Pediatrics. 2004;114(1):e85-e90. But there's limited evidence to show these work. Hot lemon with honey has a similar effect to cough medicines.
