It's interesting to extrapolate and compare some of the tendencies of these simpler life forms onto the human race. One large and noticeable difference is in the value that the human species generally has put on any individual human life with its construction of morality. For the simpler species, the production of extreme numbers presume that many will not survive and will be sacrificed. Its also interesting to note that this devaluation of the individual life resurfaces for the human species in its perpetuation of war and tribal clashes.

Carson indicates various species that have counterparts on the West Coast and elsewhere, so I would not discount reading this if you are not on the East Coast. The strange animals themselves with their odd and varied adaptations stimulate the imagination. The descriptions of Carson’s own searches for these animals will appeal to even the most casual beachcomber, even if we, unlike she, are reluctant to tread forth with flashlight on a cold October night to see the anemone in the twice-annually-uncovered-by-the-tide sea cave!

It said a recent study showed that if climate change is restricted to 2°C, up to 171,000 properties could be affected by changes to the coastline in England by 2080. The edge of the sea we do know, or may think we know, until we have read her book; for it is marginal land. But, as she herself points out, “For no two days is the shore line precisely the same … always the edge of the sea remains an elusive and indefinable boundary.” As marine science and biology have advanced a great deal since this was written some elements are quite wrong. That never distracts from the beauty of the writing, nor from the enthusiasm Rachel brings to her topics, a lot of the classifications are still sound. But, not quite all of them and if you are reading this book without having prior knowledge of the topic, that is really worth bearing in mind.However, the word can in some contexts also just mean "next to the sea/lake/river". For example: "I have a house on the shore" means your house is next to physical shore as defined above (but not necessarily that it is actually on the beach itself or anything like that). Her best-known book, Silent Spring (1962), raised awareness about the use of pesticides and contributed to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
