The skin glands are mostly restricted to certain parts of the body. Thus, in the medial side of the thighs of many lizards, for example, Green Iguana ( Iguana iguana), there are femoral pores, beneath which femoral glands are located. These glands are larger and usually more developed in males. They secrete a waxed secretion that contains various pheromones relevant to the mating period or when the animal feels endangered. They also help to determine sex in these species [ 14]. Chang C, Wu P, Baker RE, Maini PK, Alibardi L, Chuong CM. Reptile scale paradigm: Evo-Devo, pattern formation and regeneration. Bauer AM, Kluge AG, Schuett G. Lizards. In: Halliday A, Adler K, editors. The Firefly Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians. Ontario: Firefly Books; 2002. pp. 139-169 As for Florinda Bolkan, she really is a beauty. She always reminded me of a lot of Laura Antonelli. For more Bolkan, I’d recommend De Sica’s A Brief Vacation—huge change of pace but it’s a lovely movie.

Despite this not being as graphic as I'm used to from a Fulci film that is not to say there aren't good effects. I liked the extreme close-up of Julia's death as we see the knife go into something. The blood is a bit bright, but being from the 70's, I have a soft spot there. I also think that the dream sequences feel like a dream, so credit there. There's also this odd scene with dogs and them being cut open. I'm not entirely sure what is going on there, but it looks great and freaked me out. The cinematography is very well done, but I come to expect that. Reminds me of latter day Ken Russell; as much a I loved his films, some of his late-career outings felt too self-consciously weird. And dear God in heaven, did you ever see the poster for Lizard’s AIP release in the states?? I’m guessing, it’s not to accurate… Teyssier J, Saenko SV, van der Marel D, Milinkovitch MC. Photonic crystals cause active colour change in chameleons. Journal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution. 2003; 298(1):12-41 I'm so grateful that so many Giallo titles have become available. It feels like a little, unknown corner of the '70s has been unearthed. The sets in the film are also gorgeously early 70s. I recall a big sitting room with brown walls! Also, the sexy neighbors' huge bachelorett-pad with all the fur. Too trippy! From Burton to Baker (12:30, HD) – The final new interview is with actor Tony Adams, who, like Fulci, begins the interview talking about his childhood and early career, before eventually discussing Lizard in a Woman’s Skin. Also, Jean Sorel is very handsome. At the areas where dermal bones support the epidermis, bony plates called osteoderms, plates of dermal bone, are located under epidermal scales. They are present in crocodilians, some lizards, and some extinct species. Some bones of the turtle shell are modified osteoderms which have fused with the vertebrae to form a shell. Those who have had to suffer through some of Fulci's later garbage such as "City of the Living Dead", "Manhattan Baby" or "The Beyond" might be surprised to find that he could actually direct. The dream sequences are filled with startling imagery made all the more striking for their auteurism. Who could forget the dissected canines? Even the giallo parts, the "real" aspect of the movie, feature inventive camera angles that take you by surprise. Those are great giallo titles you listed. I remember seeing the poster for "Four Flies on Gray Velvet" when iw as young, and being intrigued by the title. I actually think I've seen that one, but I get it mixed up with Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Cat o' Nine tails. I have no distinct memory of the content of any of them.

Also, how great is it that you had such a familiarity with Morricone's score? I had no idea about it's cult popularity...I mean, an LP reissue!

And YES, I saw those terrible "Schizoid" posters when i was Googling poster art for this piece. It makes it look so much like it's all about killer bats! Audiences must have been so disappointed. Lizard in a Woman's Skin is a trippy hippy early-70s thriller which sees a woman accused of murdering her promiscuous neighbour. In typical giallo fashion, nothing is quite as it seems, until the final scene when the truth is divulged. Once again I believe that I am destined never to be a Fulci fan, finding the film rather dull and extremely dated. All sorts of rich people shenanigans are going on — Frank is having an affair with his secretary. And Carol may or may not be having a lesbian affair with her neighbor. Her dreams have become so intense, she can't tell fact from fiction. What worries her the most is that her latest dream ends with her stabbing Julia in vivid Fulci splendor while two hippies watch. That dream turns out to perhaps be true, as Julia is dead and Scotland Yard is on the case. The room and condition of the dead body match Carol's dream. The strength of the movie lies in the visuals, however; Fulci's wild camera work helps reinforce the sense of illusion throughout. Snakes have pigmented scales; their color can change in certain species and some snakes are also albino snakes. Color of a young snake can be brighter than in adults and may also depend on the geographical position of the snake. In the cubs of green tree python ( Morelia viridis), the color is yellowish to orange, however adult animals become green. The color of some boa species is also associated with the period of the day, where they are mostly darker at daylight and brighter at night time.

I think I one of the reasons I'm not so familiar with Italian giallo is that I'm not very much a horror fan. I don't know if "Lizard in a Woman's Skin" is average for the genre, but I really liked that it was chiefly a psychological murder mystery with suspense elements. Had it been out and out horror, i'm not sure it would have made such a strong impression. I think perhaps I'll tread lightly in seeking other giallo films. Klein MC, Gorb SN. Epidermis architecture and material properties of the skin of four snake species. Journal of the Royal Society Interface. 2012; 9:3140-3155 While it’s not directly implied that Edmund feels shame when he finds out Carol desires another woman, the reality we live in, and the knowledge that characters in these films hide their true motives until the end, are factors we can’t help but project onto the text. A mentally unbalanced woman tells her therapist about a recent dream involving her neighbor. In the dream, Carol Hammond (Florinda Bolkan) violently murders her neighbor. A few days later, the neighbors body is found. Suspicion immediately falls on Carol - her fingerprints are on the knife, her scarf is on the body, and her fur coat is on the floor. Was it a dream or did Carol really commit murder? If you were a well-to-do woman in Italy in the 1970s, chances are — based on the movies that I have seen — that you are about to killed, have killed someone, are having a lesbian affair, are on drugs or all of the above.

The movie's plot is intricate and multi-layered, leaving the audience guessing until the very end. The murder investigation is not the only thread in the story, we also see Carol struggling with her identity and sexuality. The movie explores themes such as repressed desires, identity, and personal freedom. The imagery in the movie is vivid, surreal and psychedelic, adding to the sense of confusion and disorientation. Some things, however, did not work for me. The first third of the movie is incredibly slow. Other than the murder, nothing much happens. The time is spent on developing the idea that Carol is crazy. It's not very thrilling.
