Another book in the line of personal and spiritual growth through developing an art form, it’s written from the perspective of an Olympic gymnast. This is an especially helpful read for anyone who holds too much body tension while playing. There’s even a list of stretches inside that I use daily. CRASH! In Effortless Mastery, Werner references many more relevant books for artists in any discipline at any stage of their development. That’s my favorite thing about non-fiction: almost every book I enjoy leads to numerous others! Two of my favorites (although there are many more) are Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel and Free Play by Stephen Nachmanovich. Every drummer, regardless of their skill level, can benefit from having this timeless masterpiece in their collection. This exceptional book offers endless opportunities to acquire new knowledge and refine your drumming techniques. Subdividing Breaking down quarter-, eighth-, and sixteenth-notes into their least common denominator (sixteenth-notes) helps the beginner keep these rhythms in time. Developing a good foundation helps newbies then branch out to more complex rhythms. Ex. 13 In this exercise, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths are in a sequence. Make sure to count a steady stream of sixteenth-notes all the way through as you play. Slow It Down Slowing down a pattern allows your body to relax and gives your brain time to process the information. If you go slowly enough, a potential mistake instead becomes a graceful recovery. A metronome is a great tool. It ensures that you start as slowly as you think you should, and can help tug you along to an ideal tempo. I wish I could get the whole world drumming, but I can’t even get my own family interested. They did indulge me though, for my 65th birthday they let me have a Drum Circle. We had 55 people on the drums! It was truly awe inspiring.

The Sound of Brushes is perfect for jazz drummers and even those who’d like to branch out and have an essential guide for brush playing. This book is a step-by-step guide that will help you master the art of brush playing.Aligns your body and mind with the natural world. The Greek origin of the word “rhythm” is “to flow.” Drumming allows you to flow with the rhythms of life by simply feeling the beat. A great introduction to the complex world of syncopation, it will guide you from the basics of syncopation, all the way to multi-layered patterns. This great book by Mark Guiliana gives a comprehensive system that offers a solution to creativity problems. The book is based on a system called D.R.O.P.: Dynamics, Rate, Orchestration, and Phrasing. Ex. 3 This exercise gives you a chance to try out both bass drum techniques: heel-up and heel-down. Which one feels more comfortable to you? Learning Methods This book includes exactly what the title suggests, but is the only book on the list written by a drummer for drummers. Goal setting, band dynamics, and motivation are some interesting topics discussed here.

This is by no means a drum technique book. In other words, if you’re a beginner, there are better alternatives like the first books on this list. They also like that it complements their sense of time and it’s straightforward enough to implement concepts right away. A complaint I’ve heard is about the access code to the follow-along videos not being included with the book. There are no foot exercises either, but who notices your feet when your hands are at the level of a drum master? Drumming is a serious physical activity and yet, most tutorials and handbooks miss to cover the anatomical aspects of drumming. That’s not the case with the book Anatomy of Drumming: Move Better, Feel Better, Play Better written by John L. Lamb. The author explains how to keep your body safe during your drumming sessions. The drumming community has tried and tested hundreds of different drum books over the years. Here at Drumeo, we’ve put together a list of essential drum books that we think every drummer should own. It’s not intended for a beginner as it brings a new range of rhythmic and metric possibilities, like odd rhythms, metric modulation, mixed meters, and polyrhythms. The title is explicit enough, but not including exercises to develop your foot as well as your hands is the only thing preventing this book from reaching the perfect score. Drummers have said the material is presented really well in this book and it also helps to push your brush work to the next level.

I totally agree that Drumming is beneficial therapy. I am a 65-year old guy with Parkinson’s Disease who loves to drum. Whether you’re just starting out with double bass or you’ve been playing double bass for years, this book will challenge you! Brandon Toews’ instructive book The Drummer’s Toolbox offers a thorough introduction to 101 drumming styles from the past century. Drummers of all levels are encouraged to use the book to broaden their musical horizons and develop a broader range of playing styles. In addition, it serves as a comprehensive reference manual for learning and performing drums in any musical genre.Zen in the Art of Archery was the next book I read. The author, Eugen Herrigel is a German philosophy professor. While teaching at the University of Tokyo, he took it upon himself to take up Zen, which in Japan is learned through art forms such as archery. Learning in this way is more about spiritual growth through an art form. I was fascinated to find an uncanny parallel between musical headspace and what Eugen describes in some of his experiences learning archery and, more specifically, Zen.
