The First Sunday of Advent’s Purple Candle Signifies Hope

The light of the world sweeps away the darkness in our world and in our hearts. We seek him and, in joy, find him. Each day use markers or coloring pencils to color in the picture for that day, starting on December 1st when there are 24 days until Christmas and finishing with your final picture on Christmas Eve with the final day. The first Sunday of Advent leads our hearts to Hope. The purple color symbolizes royalty, repentance, and fasting. This week is a time for us to reflect on what it must have been like to feel the depth of God’s silence during the period between the Old Testament and New.

I’m so pleased to be able to share this printable Christmas countdown calendar for kids with you because I think it’s such a sweet design! In the four weeks of Advent the third Sunday came to be a time of rejoicing that the fasting was almost over. Gaudette Sunday (“Rejoice,” from an ancient antiphon based on Philippians 4:4) has an especially joyous emphasis, so often rose (pink) as a symbol of joy is seen to replace the purple. The shift for this Sunday reflects this lessening emphasis on penitence as attention turned more to celebration of the season. Blue for Advent In recent times, however, Advent has undergone a shift in emphasis, reflected in a change of colors used in many churches. Many Protestant churches now use blue to distinguish the Season of Advent from Lent. Royal Blue is sometimes used as a symbol of royalty.

Some churches use Bright Blue to symbolize the night sky, the anticipation of the impending announcement of the King’s coming, or to symbolize the waters of Genesis 1, the beginning of a new creation. Some churches, including some Catholic churches, use blue violet ( Sarum blue) to preserve the traditional use of purple while providing a visual distinction between the purple or red violet of Lent. What About Red and Green? The nativity, the Incarnation, cannot be separated from the crucifixion. The purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world, of the “Word made flesh” and dwelling among us, is to reveal God and His grace to the world through Jesus’ life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection. To reflect this emphasis, originally Advent was a time of penitence and fasting, much as the Season of Lent and so shared the color of Lent. Gaudette Sunday We’ll be having chocolate calendars too but if you are looking for a sweet free one then this is a great sugar-free countdown alternative.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone ( Isaiah 9:2). A Christmas drawing countdown where they can draw a picture each day, the calendar numbers are drawn on each day for this A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken” ( Isaiah 40:3-5). The Third Sunday of Advent’s Pink Candle Signifies Joy For to us a child is born. To us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore ( Isaiah 9:6-7).
