The First Sunday of Advent’s Purple Candle Signifies Hope

The light of the world sweeps away the darkness in our world and in our hearts. We seek him and, in joy, find him. Each day use markers or coloring pencils to color in the picture for that day, starting on December 1st when there are 24 days until Christmas and finishing with your final picture on Christmas Eve with the final day. The first Sunday of Advent leads our hearts to Hope. The purple color symbolizes royalty, repentance, and fasting. This week is a time for us to reflect on what it must have been like to feel the depth of God’s silence during the period between the Old Testament and New.

In the four weeks of Advent the third Sunday came to be a time of rejoicing that the fasting was almost over. What About Red and Green? The nativity, the Incarnation, cannot be separated from the crucifixion. The purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world, of the “Word made flesh” and dwelling among us, is to reveal God and His grace to the world through Jesus’ life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection. To reflect this emphasis, originally Advent was a time of penitence and fasting, much as the Season of Lent and so shared the color of Lent.
