About this deal

Jane: How do we use this stuff? I imagine it's quite different from planting into soil? What's the basics of getting started with Pon?

The slow release fertiliser in Lechuza Pon should last for six months: after that you can add liquid fertiliser of your choice, or you can top up with Lechuza’s own slow release fertilisers. LECHUZA-PON has an ideal air / water ratio for plants (45% water/55% air). It also reduces a plant's vulnerability to diseases. Even after years, this structurally-stable plant substrate does not condense and keeps its air-permeable structure. LECHUZA-PON can be used for years without needing to be replaced! If you don't have something quite that fancy-pants in your plant cupboard, I would skip the fertiliser for one season (about 3 months) after upgrading to Pon, then start with the ' weakly weeky' method after that (diluting your fertiliser and using 'little and often' every time you water).Pon can be watered from the top once it dries out like soil, but it can also be used in semi-hydroponic growing. Many people who use Pon as a semi-hydrponic media prefer to use two types of pots. The first choice is either clear plastic pots with holes or clear slotted orchid pots with a reservoir. Alternatively, many people like to use the self-watering pots sold by Lechuza brand/similar dupes. What is DIY Lechuza-Pon? Why make your own DIY Lechuza-Pon? What about transferring a plant from soil or LECA? Same concept, just make sure you clean the roots of as much soil as possible. Step 4 is the most pertinent step to avoid root rot. rule: keeping the plant in soil and adding pon within the drainage level, using a drainage barrier to keep the soil and pon separate.

Jane: One of the other questions that really came up so often when I asked listeners about Pon, is rinsing. So, a question of, "Does Pon need to be rinsed before it's used?" I've got people who want to rinse a whole bag in one go, people who don't want to rinse it, people who want to rinse a little bit at a time. Give me the lowdown on rinsing. LECHUZA-PON has a continuous capillarity up to the planter's surface. Even undergrowth and small rooted plants get the perfect amount of water this way. So it is not surprising that I was looking for an alternative and found Lechuza Pon that I am going to fully review in this article. You don’t have to used Lechuza self watering planters to use pon: you can use a sealed bottom planter or open drainage planter: lots of people used clear plastic sealed containers with pon so they can see what’s happening at root level. It is highly infectious, happens when you are watering too much in combination with a dense potting mix.

Deltini is great for climbers such as Monstera Adansonii, Pothos, and climbing Philodendron that do not get too big. Well, that sounds like a lot of work saved. So let's talk about feeding. You said that the Pon comes with an inbuilt fertilizer. How long does that last and when do we need to think about starting to feed plants that are in Pon? Planters get very dirty after a while as debris and roots are accumulating. The roots attach to the inside of the planter and grow into the water reservoirWant to make a regular donation? In addition, perlite is much much lighter than Lechuza Pon and it is neutral and doesn’t contain any nutrients. To switch from the hydro-system to a new substrate is quite stressful for plants, considering the different climate, especially the water balance at the root and the type of plant. A further disadvantage is that perlite is very very dusty and squished easily leaving residue everywhere.

There are multiple available Lechuza Pon alternatives mostly developed for Bonsai and Cactus plants. You can use Lechuza Pon as a 100% substitute for potting soil or any other plant growing medium for indoor or outdoor plants. It is hydroponic soil but the regular potting soil does not have to be removed when planting with this substrate. This is unlike other hydroponic potting media such as clay balls where you have to remove all the soil. How to water Lechuza Pon? Other Lechuza pots do not have this and you either take the inner pot or net pot out and pour water into the reservoir or you water them like you would water any other pot.The multiple filtering in production reduces the fine particles in the substrate to a minimum. This prevents a silting up in the root area and sustains a long-lasting capillarity. rule: using pon in the drainage level and filling the void around the rootball with pon as well as topping the surface to completely cover the rootball with pon. You will need space for a large storage tote that will hold your DIY Pon mix (50-60qt size, usually used for storing outdoor gear or holiday decor items) as well as elbow room to work when you’re rinsing the ingredients. If you live in a small apartment or tiny home, this may present a challenge.
