About this deal

In this category, you’ll find artists’ acrylic varnishes, craft store varnishes, and polymer clay brand glazes. Acrylic varnishes contain acrylic polymer emulsion, which is an acrylic resin suspended in water. To save costs, they may also contain vinyl acrylic, vinyl stearate, vinyl acetate, polyurethane, or even polyvinyl acetate (PVA, such as in white glue). The specific formulas are usually a secret, so you’ll never know exactly what is in the varnish you choose.

I mixed the clay with shavings from oil pastels rather than chalk pastels. Because of the oily texture of the pastels, it was very hard to get ultra small particles of colour, and even after lots and lots of stirring, it still had big chunks of oil pastel in it. As you can see below, it looked OK being topped with mini marshmallows before being baked… But after baking it bizarrely rose like a tiny chocolate cup cake! I have no idea how or why this happened but as I continue experimenting I shall no doubt find out more! TOP TIP: Don’t shake liquid polymer clay before you use it as this creates air bubbles. In one of my first attempts with the material I shook the bottle and squeezed the liquid straight into a mould and this happened – ultra bubbly miniature knife and spoon (the fork broke completely!). How Do You Bake Liquid Polymer Clay? You can generally store unbaked polymer clay in plastic ziploc bags and any plastic box with a 1, 2, or 5 on the bottom. The floss box below works very well.Translucent Liquid Sculpey is the first liquid clay that I remember being on the market and it’s often referred to by its initials, TLS. The label has changed over the years, but the formula appears to be the same. TLS appears white, has the consistency of white glue, and is fairly grainy when you rub it between your fingers. It has a mild smell similar to that of Premo. Because waxes apply as a microscopically thin layerto polymer clay, they will do nothing to protect mica powder, glitter, paint, or metal leaf from wear or abrasion and can even remove them. You will not get a glossy shine with a wax. Instead, you’ll get a burnished sheen, but only when used on an already smooth surface.Wax applied to a textured surface will be white and unattractive. To bond together pieces of clay, or to bond clay with other materials such as wood, glass and metal. Liquid polymer clay, including translucent and opaque, in clear and colours. Essential for creating baked clay to baked or raw clay connections. Recommended for adhering raw to raw clay. Also used to soften hard clay and to rescue crumbly clay. Use as a shiny or protective glaze, bake in a mould, use for pouring techniques and mix with mica powders for special effects.

You can think of liquid clay as an art form in its own right to create faux effects, layers of textures and patterns. It is so sad to work hard creating something that breaks when it’s worn or used. It’s even more horrifying to realize that you’ve sold something that is made from weak clay and won’t be durable. Not all polymer clay brands are created equal and each has its uses and purposes. For making things that are thin or have areas that are thinner than 1/4″ (6mm), make sure that you’re using a strong clay such as Premo, Fimo, Pardo, Kato, Cernit, or Souffle. Sculpey III, Original Sculpey, Super Sculpey, and Bake Shop are all quite brittle after baking and should not be used, unsupported, in any area thinner than 1/4″ (6mm). These weaker brands do have their uses, however, so save them for other projects. Here’s more about choosing the best brand of polymer clay for your project. Now that i’ve discussed some of the general applications for liquid clay. Let’s go into some of the more creative and fun things you can do with it! Creative applications for liquid clay A better way is to create a small kink in the end of the eyepin, before you embed it into the raw clay. This way it cannot pull out after baking. Here’s an example of what I mean: Clear Liquid Sculpey is also one of the clearest liquid clays (second to Fimo Liquid Clay) and they come in 2fl oz bottle. Use a brush, makeup sponge or fingertip to coat a baked polymer clay piece with liquid clay, then surface-set it with a heat gun for a few minutes. Bake it fully in the oven for 15-30 minutes following instructions.
