Like many Chinese brands, Naturehike started as a manufacturer and supplier for western brands that delocalized their production to China. Here is where the Naturehike Mongar 2 really shines. Thanks to the unique design of the pole system, the setup time is cut very short. You know the hardest part, and most time consuming part of any tent setup process is leading the poles through the rainfly. Usually poles come apart while inside the fly, and it is a careful and often frustrating balancing act putting the tent together. If you want even more storage/vestibule space, Naturehike designed this super-cool porch extension for the Mongar, it adds a large space where you’ll be able to cook your camping meal without getting wet on a rainy evening, have a look!
The waterproofing of the fly is excellent. With a 4000 mm HH waterproof rating, there is no doubt in my mind that the Naturehike Mongar 2 is flirting even with four season territory. The waterproofing risk comes from how low the mesh wall goes. In case the water starts pooling up around the tent I can easily see some water getting inside.The Star River sits somewhere in between the two. So, if it’s inner space you want, then the Mongar is probably the one for you. Having two doors also helps a lot with breathability. By opening them you can circulate the air freely inside. The doors close with zippers and two tapes. They are standing out diagonally from the tent, so even if you open them during rain the water will not fall in. To the best of my knowledge, Naturehike is born out of a Chinese company producing tents for MSR, that’s why some tents are very similar to those by the American brand ( Chinese law obliges foreign manufacturers to share the intellectual property of the design). That said, you need to respray your tent regularly to keep the waterproofing in top shape, so don’t expect it to take care of you if you don’t take good care of it!
Why all these versions and variations? Well we’ve got absolutely no idea. It could simply be a case of them having certain fabrics available in certain colours at certain production prices; or perhaps they are just trying to offer a variety to suit different circumstances; or maybe they offer a few different versions to test the market… Who knows! The only fault I had was a stitch for one of the hooks on the inner net came loose after the first couple of pitches, but it was an easy fix with a needle and thread. I'd recommend you pitch a few times before leaving on a trip to make sure there aren't any issues you can fix at home. This tent has an enormous porch area, big enough to store bicycles. This can be such a relief if you’re bike touring because you can hide your precious gear out of sight, as well as keep it dry, thereby preventing rust or water damage.This is a fantastic tent for two people who want to hit the trails, and it’s much more comfortable than most affordable tents of the same weight. Taller people will have enough space to spread out, which makes for a nice change! That said, you have to bear in mind that low-budget gear won’t be the best for extreme conditions, and it’s not reasonable to expect it to perform as well as top-of-the-range expedition gear. As much as we might prefer to camp in good weather, sometimes a rainy weekend comes out of nowhere. Naturehike frequently claims that its tents are suitable for 4 seasons. I disagree with this and would ask you to treat the products as 3 season tents for your safety. Technical specs are the usual: 20d ripstop nylon with a PU4000mm waterproofness, 7001 aluminum poles, and stakes. The Mongar has more mesh than the other tents. This means it may feel cooler in summer, but may be a bit too draughty in winter. The vents are located in slightly different places on the three tents, but all three tents appear to perform adequately in terms of ventilation.

It’s perfect for one person who likes a bit more room to spread out or a couple of people who don’t mind sharing their personal space. The 4000mm waterproofed flysheet kept us dry under all circumstances and made for a very comfortable home in the rain.
