Description

Iconic Schwinn invented Airdyne technology around power unlimited wind resistance and continues to refine the technology to stand out amongst its peers. Assault also understand that athletes like to isolate body parts, meaning its products feature pegs for resting the feet if focussing on an upper body workout, while it is possible to also focus on the lower body with pedal power alone. The Schwinn Airdyne AD8 Dual Action Air Cycle is another highly recommended unit, boasting brilliant features, such as a detailed onboard computer that features preset interval workouts, as well and the ability to hook up to ANT+ heart rate monitoring devices for more reliable calorie burn and heart rate zone information. I’ve compared both of these somewhat in the review, but I figured I would touch on the differences here specifically: Manufacturer: Assault has long been one of the top names and its Elite Assault Air Bike is arguably one of the best out there, featuring seriously chunky parts that even professional athletes have trouble bending and breaking.

HIIT’s longer-duration brother ‘LISS’ (low-intensity steady-state) is also a great means of training on an air bike, for low-impact exercise that'll supercharge your stamina. By opting for cruiser cardio efforts, you can keep the heart rate low and zone out for anywhere up to 45 minutes to an hour, training your body to deliver oxygen more efficiently to your muscles, boosting endurance, increasing lung capacity and strengthening your heart. I was unable to test the heart rate display on the AD8 as I tend to use wrist-based heart-rate monitors. The Airdyne AD8 (and less expensive AD6i) allow you to pair with a telemetric Polar compatible 4.5kHz – 5.5kHz chest strap transmitter. The transmitter will automatically pair and once you enter your age you’ll see what zones you need to stay in for ‘fat burn’, ‘aerobic’ and ‘anerobic’ workouts. You can also switch between current, average and max bpm. Again this trumps the Wattbike Classic, which can’t be used with heart rate monitors. Furthermore, there's a hammer-style grip that places more emphasis on the biceps and triceps during the push/pull movement. Pedal stroke feels pretty natural, too, although keen cyclists may want to get rid of the flat, mountain bike-style pedals and replace them with some clips ins. However, there's no free-wheeling here (like a fixie bike), so stopping suddenly could potentially lead to injury. You have been warned. A padded seat provides tremendous comfort and with fore/aft adjustments, users can position the saddle right where they want it. The universal rail and clamp system also allows users to change the seat entirely and swap it out with one of their choice for complete personalisation. Arriving on a pallet, the Airdyne AD8 was already fully assembled. Unlike the AssaultBike Classic, the AD8’s pinion arms are hidden away and protected, so no chance of them getting caught on your clothing. It also meant there were no fiddly hinged arms to attach on arrival. However, with copious instructions detailing how to assemble the arms, pegs and console, I suspect consumer models will need some basic home assembly. Schwinn Airdyne AD8 dimensionsFits Many Body Sizes. The Airdyne Pro has an adjustable seat and handlebars support multiple grip positions. Getting the bike into these spaces is relatively straightforward thanks to the two wheels on the front base. Similarly, the Air Bike is also a great tool for rehabilitation, as it doesn’t have the same impact on susceptible joints, such as the knees and ankles, as running or other explosive forms of athletic exercise. What is the best air bike to buy?

Although pricey, the Airdyne AD8 is still cheaper than the industry-leading AssaultBike Elite, but I think it can more than hold its own in a head-to-head calorie-burning competition. Rewind a few years and there was really only one name in the Air Bike game and that was Assault Fitness. The AssaultBike has been a regular fixture in CrossFit Boxes and on professional sports training grounds for some time now, acting as a mightily efficient way to get the blood pumping or add that cardio edge to a strength workout. Unlike rival Air Bikes, which can be overly noisy and feel particularly prone to breaking under hard usage, the Schwinn Airdyne AD8 Dual Action Air Cycle feels very well built and its clever fan design results in fewer decibels emitted. The Schwinn AD8 is built to stand the test of time as well as the rigours of high-intensity training. Because of this, the Schwinn Airdyne AD8 comes pre-programmed with several interval training programmes, which range from 20 seconds of sprinting and 10 seconds of rest to more punishing 45 seconds or a minute of working time and slightly longer periods of rest. The Airdyne Pro also features the first belt drive system on any air bike ever produced. Belt drives have been used for a little while on bicycles with great results, but this is the first time I’ve seen it in this type of application. Basically, rather than using your typical link chain, the bike uses a heavy-duty rubber belt often seen in cars. This allows for a few things:Built-In Fitness Programs. There are nine preset workout programs can help make the most of exercise sessions. Based on what I’ve discussed earlier, the bike is built well and is thus as quiet as a fan bike can be. The fan is larger than that on the Assault and Xebex Air Bikes, but I don’t feel like it added much (maybe a little) more resistance or noise. Enjoy total body fitness with the help of the Schwinn Airdyne AD8 Dual Action Air Cycle. Offering unbeatable durability, the moisture-repellent steel construction ensures that this air bike is in it for the long run.

The first thing I noticed regarding the bike was the overall quality. The Assault Air Bike and XebexAir Bike have brought a new level to air bikes regarding build quality and the AD Pro is right up there with them.

Rowers

Both professionals and home users can confidently enjoy the benefits of the Airdyne AD8, knowing that it will stand the test of time due to the corrosion resistance steel coating.
