If they find themselves cramped into a small space for most of their lives, they could start to exhibit symptoms of mental distress. These dogs need to be able to run and stretch out. Springer Spaniels are some of the smartest dogs on the planet. In fact, they rank 13th in The Intelligence of Dogs by professor of canine psychology, Stanley Coren. In the book, they are given a high rating in all three types of canine intelligence (instinctive, adaptive, working and obedience).
