One of the easiest and most popular is the 3-hole pamphlet stitch. And then there’s the 5-hole pamphlet stitch, which some say is more secure than the 3-hole version. Occasionally a 'teenage novel' comes along which makes one reconsider the whole genre and its potential. Such a book is Melvin Burgess's Junk." You might keep photos and mementoes inside it. Or you might include your favourite recipes from books and magazines.

I've never heard of a Smash book but this is such a cute idea. I bet my daughter (18) would love to make one of these. She just started college and will have many memories to come. Thanks so much for linking up to Creative Thursday. Can’t wait to see what you share next week. Have a great weekend. You might also like to watch how I made some simple paper bag journals following a tutorial from Wendy’s Journal Adventure. The process is similar to using envelopes and bubble mailers. My main goal was to cover up the title of the book cover (an old gardening book) while highlighting the gorgeous dark green colour of it. So, I used some beautiful scrapbook paper from Crafter’s Companion, a scrap of music sheet and some faux leaves to embellish the cover. Not sure what to buy first? I’ve created a handy junk journal supplies list of the “essentials” and “nice-to-haves”. I hope you find it helpful! The image on the front is from a Stamperia paper pad. Once again, I was inspired by that, so I used white lace to signify snow and icicles. It keeps me focused and reins me in a little bit. (Otherwise, I could end up spending months working on a journal!) Junk is set in Bristol, where I lived myself for eight years in the late seventies and eighties. The book falls into two halves – the first part, where the main characters, Tar and Gemma, leave home and move to Bristol, where they meet up with some squatters, and the second part, where Tar and Gemma become become addicted to heroin. The second part of the book is based loosely on people I knew at the time. I think that one of the main reasons for the book’s success is the fact that is painted very much from life. The culture of inner city Bristol, the lifestyles of many of the characters, was something I lived myself. Tar and Gemma, Lily and Rob, come across as real people because they are based on real people, and their story rings true because it is true. All the events in the second half of the book are real. They didn’t always happen to those particular characters in that particular way, but they did happen. I had nothing to invent. Readers Comments … and some replies … Letter from Lindsie Audible gives you the chance to choose two among a small list of audible originals each month and this sounded slightly better than most of the other selections. I started listening on my walk home and almost quit on the warning that there would be pervasive language and graphic violence throughout. But it is a short walk and I gave it ten minutes. I was barely into the second chapter when I got home and that is enough for me. Or you might want to use a piece of vintage quilt or things like padded placemats to give your journal a really interesting squidgy feel in your hand.

So along came this beautiful “Enchanted Woodland” fairy journal featuring the Willow Fairy on the front. This elegant junk journal cover was another of my earlier projects (before I had my YouTube channel). The base of this journal cover is a piece of felt as I had some leftover from previous craft projects that needed using up. Melvin was born in Sussex in 1954. He is the author of a number of highly successful books for teenagers and young adults including, Junk, Doing It, Lady, My Life as a Bitch, Bloodsong, Bloodtide, Sara's Face and The Cry of the Wolf (shortlisted for the Carnegie medal). He also wrote Kill All Enemies.I then finished it off with a bookplate. I imagine my closure will be some ribbon or lace tied around the journal. And you can make junk journals out of almost anything, which means there’s also a wide mix of difficulty levels to suit each and every one of you fellow crafty people. After two years of making junk journals, I thought it was about time I wrote a blog post on how to make a junk journal from scratch, step by step. But the best thing about junk journals is that you don’t need to follow any set rules or guidelines either. So perhaps a more accurate junk journal definition is this instead:

Instead of leaving them to collect dust in a drawer, I decided to turn them into kitchen journals for our favourite recipes. One is for main dishes and the other is for desserts. I then embellished them in different ways – using my focal images as a starting point. 18. “Happiness At Christmas” Junk Journal Cover This was a weird, high-thrills alien invasion story that just became too weird and disjointed. Les Bohem is the screenwriter for Spielberg's series Taken, and the Hollywood feel is very much in evidence. Or dry your papers underneath something decorative like a plastic doily to get some fun effects on the paper. Natasa from Treasure Books has a great tutorial video on this here– and it really works! With the turn of each envelope, you discover a new fairy or multiple fairies. This was the perfect centrepiece for my front cover.Junk is told in the first person, with each chapter having a different character narrating. At the beginning of the story, fourteen-year old Gemma Brogan is spending time with David 'Tar' Lawson, a boy of the same age. Tar is a victim of physical abuse at the hands of his father, and — as he later realises — emotional abuse from his mother. Both of his parents are alcoholics. After a particularly violent incident, he decides to run away to Bristol, even though he knows no-one there and has no money. Gemma, despite having loving (albeit strict) parents, also decides to leave home and join Tar in Bristol shortly afterwards. But even if you just glue things to your base (such as a book cover), this is absolutely fine to do especially with good glues like the ones mentioned above. Both my Tim Holtz ring-bound journal and my Enchanted Woodland fairy journal had very little sewing involved (just gluing things onto my book covers) 🙂 But it's not even a real apocalypse...it's only halfsie-lypse. Only roughly half the population dies due to the titular "junk" DNA in their systems being unable to adapt to a "Russian flu" that's really an excuse (by aliens, natch) to prepare our planet for eventual colonization and resource exploitation. We learn this from a teen girl vlogger. Because OF COURSE WE LEARN IT FROM A TEEN GIRL VLOGGER. Whether you're looking to craft a whimsical photo journal or a vibrant memory keeper, this guide will walk you through all the essentials to get started.

Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained. In Junk, seers for centuries have had visions that turned out to be messages from our alien DNA. The time for the takeover is now. The aliens are ready, and they are starting to bloom. Or maybe you’d prefer to come and hang out with me on my YouTube channel and see my process first-hand? I usually publish three or four videos per week. Handmade Genuine Leather Journal - Timeless Keepsake for Writing & Sketching | Artisanal Craftsmanship | Durable and Aesthetic DiaryOnce you get comfortable with journal binding, it gets easier and you’ll be more likely to want to experiment. It’s all part of the fun! I completely understand where you’re coming from – starting is probably the hardest part and we’ve all been there 🙂 Micro mini junk journals: I’m talking tiny! There seems to be a new trend lately where more experienced junk journalers are making tiny almost doll-sized journals – just like these ones. Here’s another unique junk journal cover idea for you! Why not turn some fabric placemats into recipe journals? (Or any themed journal for that matter!)
