About this deal

My mind immediately went to Speyside, specifically to sherried malts. I personally enjoy this flavor profile. More importantly, I find it appeals to the palate of the casual Scotch drinker, someone for whom a glass of whisky is an occasional indulgence rather than an everyday treat. Speaking in broad generic terms, the fruity and nutty richness corresponds to what people think of when they think of “good whisky.”

GLENFARCLAS 105 Cask Strength single malt whisky 700ml

I did a side-by-side comparison of an older 15 year old Glenfarclas (bottled in 2006) and a contemporary bottle, same expression, and the difference in nose, palate, and even colour in the glass was stark. Spoiler alert: the older bottling won on all three counts. Palate: Silken, spicy and peppery oak. Almond, praline, hazelnut, dried peels, fruity. Touch of Armagnac, hint of rancio perhaps? No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Everything a seasoned 105 drinker could wish for in a glass. Tasting notes absolutely spot on here. Tobacco and Coffee notes throughout. Possibly the greatest cigar malt ever made. The 60% really holds up to the astringency of the cigar smoke. All of these are so much more layered, textured, and variegated than anything coming out of Macallan these days. Each one is an overachiever for the age and price, with the 21 year old being the best value for money among the three. They’re sherried, but not sherry bombs given the relatively low bottling strength. The subtlety works in their favor, allowing some novel nuances to come to the fore.If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Haven’t got any bad Glenfarclas ever. Simple as that. I especially love the 105′ because of its higher strength and the – for glenfarclas normally being straight simple but classic in design questions – outstanding design. Reminds me of the 185th anniversary bottling. Awesome dram. Tasted this sherry monster again and had a chance to really revisit it. It’s been a while since I first tasted Glenfarclas 105 and I’ve learned to drink cask strength versions since then. A dash of this whisky can be great in baking, compote, and desserts. Its sweetness and strength work well there. You hit it with this one. I haven’t had a bottle for ‘yonks’ (donkeys years) but can still remember nose and taste. Lovely stuff. Slight grapey notes if memory serves.

Glenfarclas 105 - Ratings and reviews - Whiskybase

Hazelnuts, leather, dried dark fruit, cocoa, dried orchard fruit, citrus peels, butterscotch, copper, and strawberry shortcake. Nose: Intense, powerful sherry. Cream sherry, certainly – Pedro Ximenez? almost… a touch of peppermint? An almost rancio quality to this. Smells older than 15.Finish: Amazingly smooth for the strength, wonderful warming with a lingering spiciness, yet very rounded. On the nose: Starts with a strikingly malty aroma. More lime juice, as well as stewed stone fruit, chalk, orange marmalade, and yellow sandwich mustard. The wood here is better integrated and more balanced than the 15 year old.

Glenfarclas 105° Scotch Whisky : The Whisky Exchange

So you could say the 105 in made up of whiskies with a minimum age of eight years. Older whiskies that go into the vatting are used not only for flavour but as a way of reducing the bottling strength to 60%.Having tried the 15 year, I bought a 20cl first to try. Giving it time in the glass and just a wee bit of water really brings out this lovely dram. It can be tasted neat (which I rarely do with at such abv) but it's really nice and nothing like it's 15 year old brother. To me, this bottle, 1 peaty island scotch, and 1 good bourbon can really constitute a solid "collection". You think “Sherry Bomb” and concrete examples come to mind. Macallan releases, Abelour A’bunadh batch releases, Glengoyne tea pot dram and Glendronach 15 and 18 year old expressions. Some cask strength whiskies, some not. A mixture of different sherry cask maturations from Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso, Palo Cortado, Fino… the list is quite varied. Uniquely, they do offer a broad range of flavours when maturing whisky.

Taste Fruity and spicy/spirity, dried fruits, raisin, bramble, dried apple and mango, slightly leathery, plenty of cinnamon fizz, tannic oak and freshly grated nutmeg. With water more spice, oak and a hint of cardboard. Hazelnuts, leather, dried dark fruit, copper, orange peels, baking spice, cocoa, graham, and a touch of ash. Fruity, nutty, sherried profile. What’s not to like about this? Some might say the proof (120), but that’s easily fixed with a splash of water if it’s too much. Others might say the price, but then all whisky is expensive these days, and it’s only getting more so. So I ask again… what’s not to like?About adding water, could the water be replaced with another Glenfarclas whisky , let’s say the 12 YO (it is 43% abv so there is water in it)? Could the extra maturation of the 12 YO benefit the 105 profile? Glenfarclas was the first distillery to release a cask strength single malt whisky in 1968. That CS bottling has since been renamed to 105, which is the British alcohol proof equivalent for 60% ABV (alcohol by volume). Nowadays 60% ABV is referred as 120 proof. That is simply double the alcohol by volume, as opposed to 105 degrees proof or 7/4th times the ABV. To me it’s not a great whisky, or a 6 in the scores. But hey we’ll all never agree on what scores actually mean! Hopefully the tasting notes were relatable at least and I’m glad the 105 is one you really like.
