About this deal

The IdeaPad 120S' 21,016 score on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited graphics test beats the 13,297 from the Inspiron 11 3000 (Intel HD Graphics) and the 16,230 from the Stream 11 (Intel HD Graphics 400) but falls short of the 59,434 ultraportable average. Life is hectic, and the last thing you want to worry about is running out of battery. The Ideapad 120s offers over 8 hours of battery life and can charge your other devices - even when powered off. The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28 °C / 82.4 F and are therefore cool to the touch. There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.

We don't expect much speed from eMMC hard drives, such as the 64GB module in the IdeaPad 120S, but this one fell under even those modest expectations. It took the notebook 2 minutes and 12 seconds to duplicate a DVD's worth of multimedia files, for a rate of 38.6 megabytes per second. That's slower than the 84.8MBps from the Inspiron 11 (32GB eMMC) and the 50.4MBps from the Stream 11. Maintenance options are practically non-existent. There are 10 Torx T4 screws and several stubborn plastic clips holding the bottom panel on. During our attempts at disassembly, these clips seemed determined to hold on. Prying the bottom panel off risked damage to the case; as such, we did not proceed any further. There is likely no need; the larger 14-inch Ideapad had all components except the battery and wireless card soldered to the mainboard. The smaller 11-inch unit is likely no different. Is there any risk by trying linux? I've read some reports of damaged bios in lenovo and acer laptops. I don't want irreversible software/hardware damage. We don't use this laptop very often, due to its poor performance, so I figure we should use it more. I've heard linux can revive very old pc's, so I'm wondering if installing some linux distribution I could reach better performance doing the tasks we usually perform on this device.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 500 graphics chip sits at the bottom of Intel's iGPU barrel. The graphics chip is suitable for simple graphical work, but more demanding tasks (e.g., photo editing, 3D model rendering) are completely out of the question. The HD Graphics 500 can support up to two external displays, although these will need to be pared down to FHD or lower resolutions. It's unlikely the graphics chip can drive more than a single 4K monitor at 30 Hz.

E&OE Errors may occur and information is for reference purposes only and are subject to change without notice. Because of the low TDP of the CPU and the smaller screen size, power draw is quite small. Under maximum load, the machine pulls a mere 12 Watts, which is less than almost every other compared device. Compared to the 14-inch Ideapad 120s, the 11-inch model pulls about 10% less power under load and about 25% less while idle. It is not made for people in need of a powerful CPU or GPU, super display and incredibly firm corpus but it’s rather aimed at users that don’t want or cannot spend huge sums on a mobile computer and at the same time want to have such. The laptop is a great combination of small size, low price and budget hardware. Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
