Morris began his writing career as a screenwriter, and wrote his first children's novel in 1985. His brilliantly comic style has endeared him to children and adults alike, and he is now one of Australia's most successful authors, both internationally and at home. He was born in England in 1953 and emigrated to Australia in 1969 so he could escape from school and become a Very Famous Writer. As with the other Felix books, research was an important part of preparing to write Now. The real life stories of the people and communities caught up in the terrible bushfires that swept through parts of Victoria, Australia in February 2009 inspired the story of Now in all kinds of ways. Many of those real life stories were recorded in the extensive media coverage of that time, and many others live on in the following books: In books 1 and 2, Once and Then, Gleitzman gave the reader a pretty good look at what life was life under the Nazis, the level of cruelty people can be capable of and the level of kindness, too. But the scars left by the Holocaust on those who survived it must be so unimaginably painful, one wonders how any healing can happen. But healing is what Felix needs to do in Now and so, for that matter, does granddaughter Zelda, who feels she can never to good enough to live up the idealized image of her namesake. But because Laura Harris is a magnificent publisher and a very fine person, I was hoping she was also thinking, doesn’t matter, we’ll support him in this time of craziness because that’s what we do, support our authors, even when their crazy ideas result in concussion.

Nesta história estamos no presente, Felix já é avô e tem uma neta chamada Zelda. Podemos ver aqui as marcas que a guerra lhe deixou para a vida. Morris Gleitzman’s ‘Once’ trilogy began in 2005, and was followed by ‘Then’ and ‘Now’. In 2012 the trilogy will be expanding, with one more book called ‘After’.

So obviously we find out that Felix survived the war and we also find out how he managed to survived Foi publicado em Português por último e eu prefiro ler pela ordem original para evitar alguns spoilers, mas na verdade todos os livros podem ser lidos de forma isolada. Este foi o meu favorito até agora.

Elsie doesn't know what's worse: living in the garage with your mom, grandmother and uncle behind the house that used to be home or having your father abandon you. Then her mother and uncle also leave, supposedly for jobs. Her miserable situation is all because of the Depression, which is affecting families everywhere. Her best friend, Scout, who is going to be a newspaperman, helps her search for her dad. But when Rev. Hampton takes them to see the dance marathon to show how exploitative it is, clues begin to add up. The Canadian setting and dialogue establish context for the terms hoboes, shantytowns and the phrase, "could you spare a dime." Though today’s readers won’t be familiar with the Depression, dance marathons or references to Bing Crosby, cribbage and Eaton’s catalog, the search for family and relationships in tough times rings true. The evocative title refers to the coins thrown at a favored dance couple. Once past the unappealing cover, readers will find an absorbing and perceptive story. (Historical fiction. 9-12) The story is about a little Jewish boy called Felix looking for his Mum and Dad after the start of WWII, they have left him in an orphanage in Poland as they could see what was about to happen. He runs away to find them as he does not understand what is happening around him. His adventures are traumatic and tragic. This is a nice little book written for children so is quite short, but oh so poignant and heartbreaking. It has a similar feel to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Felix has been living in an orphanage for three years and eight months when the men in armbands arrive to burn the books. Calm down, Zelda, you’re not a squeaky toy. I thank Elvis and head for the door. My phone beeps in my school bag. I know who it is without even looking. Poor Felix. He gets worried if I’m late home from school. He’s not used to being my substitute parent.

Its strange that a lot of these little books written for children are so sad and tragic but uplifting at the same time! If you've read Once and Then, you'll know that Felix also has some experience of bullies. The people that bullied Felix were six million times more deadly than the bullies who are being mean to Zelda, but Zelda's bullies still sound pretty awful.

Reading Gleitzman books is hard. It's a dilemma. You really want to read it, but you are too scared to know what will happen. And war never brought happiness nor good things. Some people were bad, and some were dying. And Once series is full of both. NOW, I live to read the third book as Felix, in the present, trying to face his terrible past with his grand-daughter.Este é o terceiro de seis livros sobre o Felix, a criança judia que escapa aos nazis durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.
