About this deal

You want a touchscreen: It's easy to use, but its underwater credentials mean the TG-6 doesn't have a touch display. I’ve got three GoPros (all of which I’ve bought myself) – a Hero 3+, a 5 and a 7, so while I can’t compare this Akaso to the most recent Heroes, I was pretty excited at the idea of upgrading my current kit for less money. My GoPro Hero 7 is far from perfect, the battery sometimes being completely dead just a day after charging it (it seems to not properly shut down sometimes), and the odd glitch here and there. Close inspection of the footage can sometimes show over-processing in the camera, but there’s a reason that professionals use these; even the BBC World Service videographers use them as second cameras at times. The level of control and the general reliability and sturdiness help justify the higher price. You do get what you pay for. For me, sound quality has long been the achilles heel of action cameras but then again, as a music producer and audiophile I would say that. So for me, it’s a pretty important thing to mention on my Akaso Brave 8 review. The supplied remote control is charged via a micro-USB port, which is a shame but not a problem assuming you have a cable at home, as one isn’t supplied.

The best action camera for 2023: top cameras for adventures

A 5K GoPro rival with modular versatility, the Insta360 One R 1-inch Edition benefits from a larger sensor that gives it superior shooting skills in low-light scenarios. Action cameras are now established as one the most powerful and indispensable weapons in the arsenal of any adventure traveller, adrenaline chaser, or irritating vlogger. Since the original GoPro exploded onto the gadget scene, a lot of pretenders have sprung up and overall the tech has come a long way. Action cameras can also be fitted inside vehicles, either to record the road like a substitute dash cam, or to capture what the driver is doing. Several motorsport series fit in-car action cameras to record racing drivers. The Brave Akaso 8 comes with a 1550mAh battery which will allow video recording in 4K for up to 90 minutes (the OCLU does 120 minutes). If you are one of those action camera users who wants to film every second of an all day bike road in 4k, then this will disappoint you. What bugs me about this is that even if you turn it off and on and save battery as much as possible, it will run down if you are going on a multi-night adventure without access to a charging point. The answer comes down to what you plan to use the camera for and what level of quality you’re willing to accept. You need a big screen: The 1.3-inch display on the One R 1-inch edition is too small and square for easy composition. Having a spare battery is also really useful, especially for those long days in the mountains or on the trails when you want to capture a lot of footage.

Swarovski NL Pure10x42 review: sensational high-end binoculars for wildlife spotting and spectator sports GoPro's most expensive action camera uses two fisheye lenses to shoot spherical 5.6K video, which you can later crop into standard 2D video using OverCapture software. In our review, we found that the six-microphone setup records excellent audio, if not quite up to the level of GoPro's 'shotgun mic' claims. In this post we are going to road test and review their latest offering, the Akaso Brave 8. We will examine what features this epic piece of kit offers, what it could be used for, and crucially whether it is worth the investment. It is fair value for what it can do and you can get all the accessories included which marks a change from some other manufacturers.Overall, I found the Brave 8's software and companion app to be unreliable to the point that it frequently would prevent the camera from being usable at all. The problems began with a tedious initial setup process which involved connecting the camera to the app (which took about five minutes just to connect) followed by updating the software which caused the app to crash twice before it was finally successful. After completing the setup, things started to get worse as the camera itself consistently encountered a few major issues, and there's a good chance that many of these are related to each other. Crashing/Unresponsiveness We mentioned the built in image stabilisation and it does seem to be doing its job reducing the excess jitteriness that tends to come with action videos. You prefer your smartphone: If you're happy to shoot with your phone, you'll be better off with the DJI OM 5 gimbal. The remote (annoyingly) takes an older microUSB cable, while the camera and battery charger take the current USB-C, a hint that the remote is something of a hangover from an older model. The mounts are very similar to GoPro items, although the system isn’t quite as robust, allowing the camera to be twisted out with relatively little force, and a good fit needs two small sets of lugs to engage – something that could be easily overlooked in more extreme use.
