Inside includes everything you need to start tossing dice and charging toward the enemy on your gaming table. Also included in the box is enough terrain for an entire battlefield. There are 15 fold-up buildings with two different footprints and a variety of different heights, and 10 punch-out card trees. While not tremendously fancy, the terrain looks great and is enough to fill out the recommended 16 terrain pieces the rules call for when setting up a battlefield (a single terrain piece is two of the smaller buildings, one large building, two single trees, or a forest created from between two and four trees to define an area).

Phoenix Hawk: The first of the three Inner Sphere medium mechs, both variants of the Phoenix Hawk are reasonably mobile harassers with real damage dealing ability. Your choice between the 4M and 3K is whether you’d rather have the ability to overheat for more damage at close range or have a bit more damage at long range. After FanPro's license expired in 2007, the Classic BattleTech license went to Catalyst Game Labs who created yet another new edition of the boxed set. Most importantly, the cardboard counters were once again replaced by twenty-four plastic miniatures that required no cutting or assembly. This mech comes with the C and T variants, with the C doing consistent damage out to long range (think of it like two Pouncer Prime’s stapled together), and the T being a closer ranged brawler that can apply heat to the target like the Pouncer T. Inner Sphere Mechs In 2022 CGL released a second edition of its BattleTech Beginner Box in connection with a variety of mercenary themed products. This edition replaced the Wolverine plastic miniature with a Vindicator plastic miniature. (The Wolverine plastic miniature was also included in BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat, so this change removed that overlap.) This product has also been marketed as BattleTech Beginner Box (Vindicator Edition).

The fourth edition redesigned the rulebook again. Calling itself 'BT4', it states that the "current" year of the BattleTech universe is 3058, while BT4 is set in 3049. It also makes reference to the Rules Levels previously seen in CityTech, Second Edition, and states that the technology described in the BT4 game is Level 1, whereas Level 2 includes the technology available in 3058. Three of the previous edition's four scenarios ("Final Exam", "Trial by Fire", and "Divide and Conquer") were included in the rulebook, with small changes; most importantly, the original (now Unseen) 'Mechs in these scenarios were exchanged for different 'Mechs from BT4's new lineup. BattleTech News Post (2022) Now Available: BattleMech Recognition Guide Vol. 26; Update on Alpha Strike Boxed Set This premium ‘Mech ALSO comes with an extra torso for the previous release, the Hammerhead! The Hammerhead originally shipped with the wrong torso. So replace it with this one or just kit bash yourself a new FrankenMech with all those extra parts you’ve been collecting! The third edition of the boxed set, released by FASA in 1992, replaced the paper cutout playing pieces with plastic miniatures. One was provided for each of the fourteen standard 'Mechs from the second edition. The new edition also contained a booklet with prefilled record sheets for these fourteen 'Mechs. The Merlin and Chameleon made no appearance. The march of technology acrossBattleTech’s eras is relentless—but some war machines never die. This PDF-only series includes brand-new BattleMechs and OmniMechs, alongside Classic ’Mechs and combat vehicles from both the Inner Sphere and the Clans rebuilt with the latest technology to keep them competitive on modern battlefields. This series also includes in-universe development notes, battle histories, notable pilots, and record sheets for each unit.

Final Thoughts

I’m looking forward to playing more games with this ruleset, as I can easily see that playing company-on-company or larger games are still something you’ll get done in an evening after work. It’s definitely a different feel than Total Warfare, in that it satisfies a desire for mass combat rather than simulationist crunch, but it’s a good feel, and one that has a much lower barrier of complexity. Final Thoughts Warhammer: A personal favorite, both included Warhammer variants are brawlers with good armor and more firepower at close range than long range. The 8R has more damage and durability than the 6R, but their main difference is really just one of cost. The BattleTech Introductory Box Set was published in 2014 with miniatures for the standard group of 24 'Mechs that had been in several prior box sets. The molds and sculpts were revised from those used for the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set and 25th Anniversary Introductory Box Set. Also a different plastic and improved molding process was used. The 2014 BattleTech Introductory Box Set also included two premium quality plastic miniatures: a Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) and a BattleMaster BLR-4S from Project Phoenix. These replaced the Thor and Loki that were included in the 25th Anniversary Introductory Box Set. These two came on dedicated sprues and required assembly, unlike the base 24 models they accompanied.
