In total, it’s been about two years! The highlight of the process really was receiving the advance copies of my book, holding it in my hands and thinking about how far it’s come! Little Red is on his way to visit his grandmother on the other side of the wood. Ignoring all warnings of wolves in the wood, he removes his coat and strays from the path. That s when the greedy wolf, lurking in the wood, hatches an evil plan. He steals the little boy's red coat and hurries to the cottage to gobble up Little Red s shortsighted grandmother. And Little Red is next on the menu! But can a keg of delicious sparkling ginger beer save him from a gruesome end? With settings from the fabulously quirky 'Ye Olde Belch' Inn to grandmother's eerie old cottage, this witty reworking of the classic tale is perfectly adapted to 18th-century England and is bursting with period detail. Other titles in the series: Cinderella and Rapunzel. Text Rationale: Bethan Woollvin's version [of Little Red Riding Hood] has a far darker ending - and I loved it. The talented illustrator and writer has taken a childhood niggle as her premise for this bold feminist version of the story: would our caped heroine really have been taken in by a wolf in a bad grandma disguise? ... I won't spoil the ending but let's just say Little Red wraps it up nicely (and warmly) and it has my three year old son thrilled at every read, begging for more. The Times I started Little Red whilst I was at university in my second year of my BA in illustration. The class were given a project to create a book in six weeks – that was it, a very open brief. Quite a few people in our class decided to give our brief a bit more structure by taking the opportunity to base it around a live brief or a competition. Advice I would give to an aspiring illustrator would be to not judge your own work too early, it could be something beautiful! I try to nurture an idea as much as I can before I show others. Receiving critiques from your peers is vital in the creative process, but if you or others judge an idea before it has bloomed you might start to doubt something that could have been amazing. If you persevere, it might pay off! On the way to visit her grandmother, Little Red Riding Hood meets a big bad wolf in the forest. Although some children may find this encounter frightening, Little Red is a feisty young girl and is not at all intimidated, so continues on her way. A perfectly charming retelling of the classic tale, with plenty of side-eye. This version dispenses with all the details, none of that nonsense about not being able to leave the path, and there's no suspense when she meets the wolf in granny's clothing. Red cuts straight to the chase. She's got a plan. On reflection the project has exceeded all expectations and intentions. I only decided to create a children’s book as an experiment at university, and it went on to win the Macmillan Childrens Book Competition, amongst other wonderful recognitions! It feels very strange because I didn’t think it would ever leave my sketch book, let alone become published…This rendition of Little Red Riding Hood is a little disturbing (not that the original isn't!). The Red-is-victorious outcome common in most modern retellings of the story has a slight twist in this version. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I can see some kids really enjoying this one. My favourite thing about working with two hoots and Macmillan has definitely been my free range to be able to write and illustrate how I please. Little Red has been tidied up in the sense of illustrations and text but the story and the compositional ideas are the same as they were two years ago in my dummy book. They never diluted my humour or asked me to change my characters, they loved Little Red the way it was and have always supported my creative process. Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations. What left me wanting more: This book is a bit scary and should not be read to sensitive children. The wolf is shown eating the grandmother, and he is definitely a scary presence throughout. Little Red is also shown wearing the wolf's pelt at the end, which may also be challenging for sensitive animal lovers. This is definitely a dark story, and it would be better for children who enjoy a touch of the dark in their fairytales.
