Just as I'd got the tent up, the peg-loop webbing on one of the corners broke - probably due to me using multiple pegs instead of just one (but using just one peg doesn't work, so what can you do). I made a new loop with an overhand knot, which held fine. During the night the poles started sliding and falling down, and this continued all through the night and into the next morning.

In use, I tested it on two separate occasions. The first on a mild autumn night when I was able to keep the hood pretty much open all night. It was wonderful to see the stars, and I recommend reading this great stargazing guide if that’s of interest to you. On a second occasion, I had some heavyish rain but found that I stayed relatively dry overnight with a small amount of condensation on the hood from my breath – nothing to worry about and my sleeping bag was not wet at all. We recently reviewed the OEX Bush Pro Bivvi and feel we have to include it in this roundup of the best bivvy bag choices. It represents fantastic value for money, and pushes the Highlander Hawk really close for the top spot if you’re looking to spend less. In our view, the hood system is slightly better in the Highlander Hawk, but with the OEX Bush Pro being substantially cheaper, it’s certainly a close run decision. The hood area can be zipped up to obtain complete coverage at night, although this does increase the chances of condensation forming inside. The revolutionary Biffy Powder’s secret formula engulfs the waste creating an immediate seal to eliminate odor and solidifies liquids for a safe and sanitary transport. The bag within a bag design offers 3 layers of leak protection and provides 4000 times the odor resistance of a standard garbage bag. The transport bag itself has a burst strength rating greater than 50 psi and a puncture resistant rating greater then 13 psi making it virtually leak proof. Portable toilet kits are just the bag that you put inside the toilet—they don’t include the thing you sit on. Paired with a portable toilet, they provide a more comfortable and convenient option for longer camping, vanlife, overlanding, or RV trips. Sometimes, these kits come with urine diversion systems, which separate urine from solid waste to reduce odor. Blue bagCarefully lift the sides of the liner bag so contents can get to the bottom. Use the straps to cinch the bag closed. One of the things to be aware of is that while some bivvy bags will position themselves as being breathable, it can be difficult to have a fully breathable and fully waterproof bag.

Ahh, the Lanshan 2 in all its glory. A lot went wrong here. Despite being a bit of a pain, I still love this tent. But I’ll be saving it for summer haha! Forest fires are not the reason for avoiding fires in the winter because forest fires are unlikely to ignite where the landscape is covered in snow, but in the dryer months, campfires are also a major human cause of wildfires. Even if you are outside of an Alpine zone where fires are prohibited, it is still a good idea to avoid building unnecessary campfires. Fancy it? If you do, then you’re in the right place. We’ve done the hard work for you, putting several products – ranging in design, style, size and price – through their paces on wild camping trips to Scotland, the Brecon Beacons and the Lake District. So, whether you’re looking to venture into bivvying for the first time or if you’re a seasoned pro at sleeping under the stars, there’s something for everyone here. The Best Bivy Bags Tested by Our Team The hydrostatic head of the Helium is 20000 mm which is exceedingly waterproof and the Pertex material is also supposedly resistant to rips – however I didn’t wish to test this claim out! If you want to spend more money, then Outdoor Research also do a full Gore-Tex bivvy called the Alpine, but this is actually heavier.

Like other bags we tested, Restop 2 has a triple barrier bag design with an outer bag made of odor-proof mylar. The Restop 2 Wilderness Waste Containment pouch uses a polymer/enzyme blend to gel liquid and waste to prevent spillage. The enzyme also helps with odor. As Rab’s cheapest and lightest bivvy, this is well suited to campers looking to ditch the tent for the first time. The Trailhead is crafted from hardwearing 40 Denier ripstop nylon with a breathable yet waterproof polyurethane coating on both its top and base. This durable combination ensures that any rain is kept at bay, while a zipped mesh vent enables appropriate ventilation. All seams are taped, completing what is an impressively watertight product.

How much heat it holds in - in my experience it is 4-5 °C warmer inside the tent than outside, and that's with a ventilation panel open too. This makes a huge difference in cold conditions The price! This is an insanely expensive tent. For me with the amount of camping I do in these kind of conditions it's a worthwhile investment. But for nice-weather camping in the woods, probably best to save your money In the PNW most people hike July-September and this concentrated use can put considerable strain on the trails. To control the adverse impact, Oregon is now expanding permit areas to limit the number of hikers and the same is likely to happen in Washington state in the years to come. The popular area known as the Enchantments, had over 17,000 visitors in 2017 with 3000 overnight permits issued (over 20,000 people applied). These permits are just for six months—May 15 through October 31. July and August probably get the highest number of visitors.Travel in smaller groups (3–12). The maximum group size in wilderness areas in Washington state is 12. It feels incredibly well made and sturdy, although I do struggle with the weight of it on top of my winter sleep system, so I won't be able to walk too far with this tent. I've included some specs in the video. Here's a few things that I like and dislike about this tent so far.. Downsides are the same as for any bivvy of this kind. If it’s raining you can find yourself having to get into it when you otherwise wouldn’t with a small tent. Using a tarp can overcome that problem, and we would certainly recommend that if you think there will be trees to set it up. Alternatively bring along some poles for the tarp.

This new version of the Helium, released only this year, comes in 14% lighter than the previous generation, and from what we can see there’s been no downgrade in performance either. I'm able to cook in the vestibule in the rain, without water getting inside the inner or wetting my sleep systemThe material used for the top section of the bivvy is Rab’s eVent waterproof and breathable technical fabric which is 40 dernier and consists of three layers sandwiched together. The bathtub uses a more weighty 70 dernier nylon waterproof floor – this won’t be letting any moisture up from the ground. Emergency shelter: Foil blankets are waterproof and can protect from rain or light snow if fashioned into a tent or tarp.
