Description

The name Bunnahabhain (pronounced 'Bunn-na-ha-ven’), translates as ‘foot of the river’. The distillery is located within the small Islay village of the same name. Founded in 1881, the village was built to house the workers of the distillery. Construction began in January 1883, at the dawn of the ‘whisky boom’ (sound familiar?) following Scotch whisky’s unprecedented growth in popularity within the British Empire.

Bunnahabhain 12-year-old Cask Strength – Whisky Reviews Bunnahabhain 12-year-old Cask Strength – Whisky Reviews

The 2022 12 Years Old Cask Strength release has been matured in first- and second-fill oloroso sherry casks – as was the first 12 Years Old Cask Strength release in 2021 – which the distillery says impart notes of "intense dried fruits and warm cinnamon spice". The new expression is bottled at 56.6% ABV.Bunnahabhain is a distillery situated on the north coast of Islay. The distillery was founded in 1881, and today it produces a variety of whisky styles. Bunnahabhain is best known for its unpeated whiskies, which are light and fruity in style. The distillery also produces peated whiskies, which are more robust and smoky in character. Regardless of style, all of Bunnahabhain's whiskies are renowned for their smoothness and balance. Thoughts: I’m a huge fan of Bunnahabhain’s standard 12-year-old bottling. In terms of core range, age-stated releases, it’s about the best value for money you’ll find today. The idea of a cask strength version seemed to hold a lot of potential but I did wonder how much better it could be, given the impressive standard of the original. As it turns out, the original could be improved upon. Quite a bit, in fact. The sherry character seems more intense in the cask strength version. In fact, everything seems to have been dialled up a notch. The raisins are juicier, the caramel richer and the peppercorns spicier. It’s just altogether… bigger. We asked our Master Blender, Julieann Fernandez, to explain more about the differences between our first and second 12 Year Old cask strength releases. Here's what she had to say... The mouthfeel and texture of the whisky increases, showing off the balance of the spirit and the wood, but in a more concentrated form. Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2022 Release

Bunnahabhain Distillery dates from the Victorian age. It was established in the north-east of Islay in 1881. In those days, that part of the island was largely empty. The village that now surrounds the distillery was built purely to accommodate the workers. All deliveries were made by sea with fuel and supplies dropped off and whisky shipped off to the mainland to be sold to the blenders and bottlers of the big cities. It wasn’t until 1960 that a road was constructed to link the distillery with Port Askaig. Even then, deliveries by boat continued until 1993. With each cask being different, natural variation can occur from one batch to the next, however we take great care to assess the spirit from each cask individually to ensure the character of the spirit has not lost its identity. And if so, will there be added desire from Islay whisky makers to produce more non-peated Scotch whisky? We know of occasionally unpeated Caol Ila and Ardbeg as well as other small-scale runs here and there, but not a defined profile or brand. Perhaps a new whisky alongside Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich; a non-peated malt with less difficult pronunciation, perhaps? If you see this on offer, get it. For fun, pour it alongside something heavily peated, say the Port Charlotte 10 and/or a Ledaig 10. Just to gauge as to how different in phenolic level this whisky actually is, and how there’s still enough of the maritime element in there to make it scrumptious anyway. Lovely stuff. The distillery has come a long way since those days and the Scotch whisky industry has become somewhat obsessed (with good reason) with reducing its emissions. The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has set a target of net zero emissions by 2040. Bunnahabhain, however, hopes to beat that date by a considerable margin. Palate: Toasted nuts, salted caramel and chocolate covered raisins are intertwined with crisp apple, poached pears and a dusting of cinnamon. Whiskybase B.V. Bunnahabhain has since been described as a lightly peated malt, with enthusiasts occasionally leaning towards the opinion that there’s no peat whatsoever. However, the distillery buys a proportion of peated malt from Port Ellen as well as unpeated from other maltsters. It’s currently around 3-4 phenols ppm, with annual heavily peated campaigns also running. There are not many contemporary releases worth chasing, but this cask strength Bunnahabhain is a notable exception. On the nose, prunes, almonds and earthy sherry notes are complemented by bitter chocolate, tobacco and currants. Very inviting and layered. The rich arrival is bursting with dark fruits, toffee and cocoa, while nutmeg, mint and hints of salt develop mid-palate. Sublime mouthfeel. Slightly dry oak, roasted coffee and eucalyptus remain in the prolonged aftertaste. An adorable sherry bomb, I can only quote Ralfy: What an absolute joy! The latest expression is richer in sweet chocolate and red fruits on the nose and carries a spicier finish delivering bigger, richer and fuller flavours of oloroso sherry that Bunnahabhain drinkers have come to know and love."
