It’s a speedy brewer, too, as you’ll only have to wait a mere six minutes for a full, ten-cup jug of coffee. The hot water element turns off automatically once the 1.25L water tank is empty, while the hot plate remains on to keep coffee hot for 40 minutes. What’s most notable about the hot plate, though, is that it preserves the temperature at around 80 to 85°C and doesn’t impact the coffee as markedly as other hot-plates on alternative filter coffee machines. The Moccamaster stands out as a sleek and sensible choice for consistently great coffee without the hassle.

The programmability is where the Sage precision drip coffee maker really justifies the price tag though. The origin and blend, of course, is yours to choose. In terms of grind – filter coffee is works best with a medium grind, although for a Fellow or a Hario, we recommend grinding a little finer than a Chemex. It doesn’t take up too much space, in fact, it takes up no space on your worktop, you can simply store it in the cupboard until needed, unlike larger electronic coffee machines. The Aroma Elegance is in the top range of Melitta filter coffee machines. It has a couple of functions that set it apart from other Melitta drip coffee machines plus it comes with a thermal carafe which is superior to a hot plate when it comes to taste.

The glass can break, but replacements are widely available. The plastic or metal handle and plunger are reusable.Just swing out the filter basket and tip in your ground coffee. Fill the tank up to the desired amount of coffee you’d like to brew.

The pulsing water bath maintains a constant brew temperature, which is often a variable in a coffee filter dripper that is overlooked but can really affect the end brew. Measure out 60 grams of coffee for every litre of water. Obviously, if you’re only using 250ml of water, that’s 15g of coffee, and so on. If you don’t have scales then Hario brewers come with a scoop to give you an idea. The Morphy Richards coffee maker uses flat bottom filters, which are favoured amongst many coffee connoisseurs. The Hario W60 Dripper has arrived, developed in collaboration with the 2013 World Barista Champion, Pete Licata! It’s best to leave your filter coffee machine preconceptions at the door as modern makers have improved drastically since the relics of the 1970s. While the principle of adding hot water to ground coffee remains the same, the technology has moved on. For example, from 2015, filter coffee machines have been required to have an auto shut-off after five or 40 minutes (for insulated and non-insulated jugs respectively), so they won’t stew your brew for hours on a hot plate. The removable 1.25-litre water tank is a nice addition, so you don’t have to fill the carafe from the tap then decant into the machine, and the descaling light reminds you to banish limescale buildup on a regular basis. There’s also a strength adjuster, AromaSelector, on the top of the machine but we found it to be more effective when brewing smaller amounts of coffee – at its full capacity of 10 large cups (125ml) or 15 small cups (85ml) it made little difference to the flavour.
