Archived from the original on 2 January 2020. The Dunkirk evacuation is such a remarkable story of survival and the sheer courage humans have, when tested to the absolute limit. This story has recently been brought to life in a dramatic fashion in Christopher's Nolans film. I'm not here to talk about the film, but it is definitely a masterpiece in my eyes. Sullivan, Kevin P. Most history, especially popular history written for general readership, is presented from the perspective of the eventual winners. Even battles they lost are presented through a victorious lens. It is always interesting to get the other side of the story. Not just a couple of quotes to highlight the winner's version, but an actual account of the events from another perspective. That is what Kershaw offers the reader here. Levine's 2011 book has been updated for the upcoming movie release, and it is bookended with an interview between Levine and Nolan at the beginning of the book about why Nolan chose this project, and a chapter at the end of the book discussing the process of making the movie, including comments from members of the production team. Movie buffs will love these extra chapters, giving them a fascinating insight into the process of moviemaking.

Operation Dynamo involved the coordinated effort of the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force (RAF), and a flotilla of civilian boats. The operation was led by Vice-Admiral Bertram Ramsay, who oversaw the evacuation from a headquarters set up in Dover, England. Hugh Sebag-Montefiore meticulously analyzes the events of the Dunkirk evacuation, incorporating extensive research and personal testimonies. The book delves into the military strategies, the heroism of individuals, and the challenges faced during this critical operation. In May 1940 British and Allied troops on mainland Europe were in a perilous situation: cut off and surrounded, at the conclusion of the bloody Battle of France they faced complete annihilation. It would be a devastating blow, handing Europe to the Nazis. Early scenes of the film were shot at Weymouth harbour, and the final scenes at Swanage railway station. [16] Universal Pictures' Falls Lake studio in Los Angeles was used for interior and exterior sets of a sinking ship and plane, with the ship interiors filmed in a water tank using stuntmen. [16] [32] To get acclimatised to cold water scenes, Styles and Whitehead underwent training sessions at Point Dume. [16] MLV Castor was modified to resemble HMS Basilisk.

The town's heritage has strong links with the fishing industry and the town's Port Museum tells the story of the history of Dunkirk's maritime and fishing past. The town's museums also reflect on the fact that Dunkirk is a war time historic town and contain a wealth of information about the war and especially of Operation Dynamo. The little tangent at the beginning has to do with this little rabbit trail of mine: in this book there's a high body count, quite a few mentions of men frequenting brothels (because they wanted a last taste at life the author says), and other things.
