A visually stunning reimagining of the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel by master storyteller Neil Gaiman, beautifully illustrated by the award-winning Lorenzo Mattotti

With stark subtlety, Mattotti’s haunting visual interpretation amplifies the atmosphere that Gaiman so elegantly evokes. As usual, Neil Gaiman doesn't disappoint. This version of Hansel and Gretel is a terrific retelling of the story. It's faithful to the original tale and doesn't take much in the way of liberties, but Gaiman definitely leaves his mark, adding a layer of sympathy for the parents that adds quite a bit of depth to the story. This is the new definitive version of the tale. Need to cancel an existing donation? (It's okay — life changes course. Maybe I wouldn't be so disappointed if I hadn't read The Sleeper and the Spindle a few weeks ago, that was everything a retelling should be. It brought something new to a already well known story while still being beautifully told and illustrated. Maybe it's unfair to compare the two but as someone who grew up on Grimm's fairy tales, I expected more than the same story with slightly different words, especially considering who wrote them this time. No wonder Gaiman is close friends with George R. R. Martin and so defensive of his pal. Both write people who eat like baby pigs and have no chins. Gaiman hasn't put a fantastical spin on this classic Grimm's fairytale and basically recounts the original story. Imagine that you were taken into a forest. What is it like? How would you describe it?? (see Resources below)

Hansel And Gretel - Teaching Ideas Hansel And Gretel - Teaching Ideas

Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti both remember the horror and fascination with which they read the Grimm Brothers' "Hansel and Gretel." The writer and the artist now join forces for a brilliant reimagining of one of humanity's most enduring tales. This version of Hansel & Gretel by Neil Gaiman has to be one of my favorites. I loved that it stays close to the original Grimm version and preserves the chilling details... The old woman in the house is ‘as old as the hills’. Can you think of other similes to describe her / the other characters in the story? You can also become a spontaneous supporter with a one-time donation in any amount: GIVE NOW BITCOIN DONATION The pebbles that Hansel drops shine in the moonlight. Why do things shine / reflect light? Can you think of other reflective materials that might be able to help the children find their way home? Gaiman did a splendid job when he retold Sleeping Beauty ( The Sleeper and the Spindle) so I was excited at the idea of another classic being twisted by his mind.

Hansel and Gretel by Neil Gaiman Review of the Day: Hansel and Gretel by Neil Gaiman

Master storyteller Gaiman plumbs the dark depths of Hansel and Gretel… Italian illustrator Mattotti contributes elegant b&w ink spreads that alternate with spreads of text. His artistry flows from the movement of his brush and the play of light and shadow.”— Publishers Weekly , starred review

After a recent aborted attempt of an adult version of the same tale ( The True Story of Hansel and Gretel), reading this cleansed my palate. This telling by Neil Gaiman breaks no new ground, but his prose is a delight to read. so berichtet das Nachwort dieses kleinen Buchs – wurde „Hänsel & Gretel“ von den Gebrü-dern Grimm das erste Mal in „Kinder- und Haushaltssagen“ veröffentlicht, im ersten Band ihrer Sammlung. Ihren Ursprung soll sie allerdings in der großen Hungersnot von 1315 gehabt haben. 2007 dann brachten Neil Gaiman und Lorenzo Mattotti zur Feier einer Aufführung von „Hänsel & Gretel“ im Metropolitan Opera House dieses Buch heraus. Today, when the oven is hot enough, we will roast your brother,” she announces to Gretel. “But do not be sad. I will give you his bones to chew, little one.” Neil Gaiman is the best-selling author of short fiction, novels, comic books, graphic novels, audio, theater, and films for children and adults alike. His work has received many international awards, including the Newbery and Carnegie Medals, as well as Hugos, two Nebulas, a World Fantasy Award, four Bram Stoker Awards, six Locus Awards, and countless other honors. He is a pillar of modern fantasy writing. He has said that the story of Hansel and Gretel is what made him want to be a writer.

I am giving this book 5 stars for the story (which, of course, was slighty changed / more elaborate than the origianl fairy tale) and 4 for the art work (which is stunning but not as much as the one from The Sleeper and the Spindle). And not a particularly interesting or unique one. There wasn't some special twist or character development. It's literally just Hansel and Gretel. The kids get "lost" in the woods, stumble upon a witch, nearly get eaten and manage to get their revenge.
