The rather flat narrative of his team's results means that his poorer performances are never questioned - he stuggled to get Mainz promoted, faltering at the end of the season, and Mainz's relegation is excused as he had to sell some players. Although Dortmund were at a low ebb, they are still a massive German team, and the underdog story was taken a bit too far for a club of Dortmund's resources. That said, he did win the Bundesliga twice, which was an undeniably great achievement, but that doesn't excuse him of any criticism whatsoever.

Bring the Noise' is a solid introduction to the man & his managerial and tactical philosophy but feels under-developed in all the crucial areas. As a Liverpool fan, one hopes a few more successful chapters will help to solve this problem for the next edition! There are a few decent tidbits of insight, such as the influence of Wolfgang Frank on Klopp's career. But it only really skims the surface. For football addicts, this book would have been fascinating because there were so many mentions of players and historical football tournaments the author made reference to. I couldn't follow these parts of the book, but what I really liked about the book is the author gave enough emphasis on how Klopp started, grew and learnt about the art of football and also about Klopp's superb character which nails him to be a great football manager. Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid: Jurgen Klopp vows Reds will come again after Champions League final lossJurgen Klopp's biography leapfrogged my reading list based on recommendations and curiousity about the manager that turned around Liverpool's fortune. Liverpool had plenty of chances in the first half against Real at the Stade de France, but found goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in outstanding form as the former Chelsea player made several superb saves. Towards the end, it becomes a difficult read and feels a bit like a rushed essay. There are a fair few typos. Reading this reinforced that an autobiography is far more interesting as you get to see inside the mind of the subject rather than getting an observer's, irrespective of how close, perspective in a biography.

First, Honigstein's various interviews make it clear that Klopp is a classic football romantic: the journey and the experience are almost equally important to him as the final result. For Mainz, Dortmund & Liverpool, in both victories and gut-wrenching defeats (of which many have rightly noted Klopp has a disproportionately high number for his time in the game) he makes constant references to "our story", "our dream" etc. There's a particularly revealing interview after Dortmund pulled off a famous underdog victory against Malaga in 2013 to reach the Champions League semi-finals: "My motivation as a coach is to collect that kind of stuff, for people to tell and retell it. Football is a shared collection of stories, a shared history, an identity. You win and you lose, but you're with people you like. You're at home, you belong. That's what we all want. Ten million people want to belong here". Certainly not a sentiment you would expect from most rival managers, e.g. Jose Mourinho or Rafa Benitez. In this context, it's not unsurprising that Klopp has only chosen to manage three blue-collar clubs with rich histories, somewhat faded glories but a strong sense of community, culture & work ethic, forming a deliberately close bond with supporters at all three. You will learn a bit about what kind of character is Klopp, but as I said a bit. There is not that many information about what made Klopp make that decision or go in that club. In the dressing room nobody feels it was a great season at the moment," Klopp added on BT Sport. "We maybe need a few hours for that. It’s also fascinated me how a manager’s character can shape the neutral fan’s perception of a football team. Under previous Liverpool managers (especially Houlier) I found Liverpool quite dis-likable and certainly not a team I would root for. Yet under Klopp its hard not to have a soft spot for the free-flowing Liverpool team that plays in a manner

my biggest gripe with the book is that the final 1/3 is no more than a summary of liverpool seasons under klopp, considering the target audiance for this book is liverpoll/football fans the ending seemed unneccessary. Amazing book. As simple as that. The book is well-written and the author keeps you engaged throughout the Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool journeys. Pity that it was written before Liverpool's incredible 2018 Champions League journey. Nonetheless, a great book and let you in into Jurgen's wonderful character. Jurgen Klopp is truly much more than a football coach. An inspiration wherever he had been. Whilst not in his own words this book is an interesting insight into Klopp and gives you a good overview of his career prior to joining Liverpool. We played a good game, not a perfect game. The boys tried everything, especially at 1-0 down then we played like we wanted to play before." Former England captain Alan Shearer said the players should be able to reflect positively on what they had done this season, despite the disappointment of missing out on league and European honours.A real passionate coach and man, anywhere where he went,he built strong bounds with the fans, coz he believes that they're the key to success, to win and to change games.
