When testing this product in our lab, the stain removed worked well against fresh stains, but it stood out among the rest in terms of removing set-in stains. It completely removed set-in grass, marker, olive oil, and chocolate syrup stains. Though it wasn’t able to fully remove makeup and red wine stains, both stains were lightened quite a bit. To find the best stain removers, we tested 30 different stain removers at our lab in Des Moines, Iowa. Each product was covered during testing so the testers weren’t aware of the brand or price. Oftentimes odors are caused by residual bacteria living on fabric, and on items like workout clothes they can start to smell again when exposed to our body heat and moisture.
OxiClean is well-known for its effective cleaning power, so it’s no surprise that the brand’s Versatile Stain Remover Powder was able to completely get rid of red wine—one of the most stubborn stains—during our testing. Unlike other laundry stain removers, this oxygen-based, water-activated formula works on various types of fabrics and clothing as well as upholstery, carpet, grout, and other surfaces.
According to Flores, blood, grass, ink, and wine are some of the hardest stains to remove, especially once they’ve set in. Other common stains, such as food, oil, makeup, grease, grime, dirt, coffee, and baby stains, can be removed with the right product and pre-treatment if necessary. Testers also applied 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 1 teaspoon of foundation to a separate T-shirt to judge each product’s efficacy on oil-based stains.
If you’re using dish soap, make a solution of one cup of warm water and a drop or two of soap. I’ve found that Dawn and Dawn Powerwash work best — just make sure not to overdo it because using too much will make too many suds in your washing machine and can cause a whole slew of issues. Gently work that solution into the stain and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before washing. The stain remover also almost completely lifted a tough makeup stain, and the testers were confident it would be removed after another treatment. It wasn’t able to completely remove a red wine stain, but it did improve the stain quite a bit. Grease stains include all stains that are oil based, from cooking oils to makeup to bike grease — and depending on the source of the grease, they can be the easiest or the hardest stains to remove. While it’s possible to fade some stains using common household ingredients, laundry stain removers are an easy and effective way to get rid of tough messes. To test if our formula is safe for your fabric, choose an inconspicuous corner of the material, (maybe a hem or other hidden area) and apply the formula. Leave for two to three minutes and then blot with a white paper towel. If the colors do not change, run, or come off on the paper towel, and if the item is definitely washable, you may safely use the all The Hate Stains Co. products. ► To remove stains, hold the can six inches away from the stained fabric and spray. Then, wait one to five minutes and launder as usual. Be careful not to let the spray sit for too long on the fabric so it doesn’t dry. Our testers found that this laundry stain remover worked best on fresh food stains. After one treatment, the chocolate, olive oil, grass, and marker stains were completely removed from the stained t-shirts. The red wine stain showed improvement, but it was still visible. The testers also noted the spray bottle was simple to use, and there was no noticeable scent.
