She retires to the sleepy town of Frantham-on-Sea. Here on the Dorset coast, she runs her own immaculate guest house and life is blissfully quiet. Charlie Broadway, 24, wounded Wilfie Isaacs Jnr, 22, before pointing the double-barrelled pump-action shotgun at his father Wilfred Isaacs Snr, 49, and shooting him dead at close range. Murder on Sea by Jane A. Adams is the first book in the new Rina Martin Mystery series and I really enjoyed it. I found this book very enjoyable and hard to put down once I started to read it (and then forgot to do a review for it Sorry) Murder on Sea had lots of great twists and turns throughout and the killer took me by surprise. The characters were interesting and played their parts well in this book

One particular neighbour and the other main character, Rina Martin, is a former actor and now owner of a guest house/home for other former performers and her friends.

Murder-on-Sea

My only real issues with the book are caused by confusion and personal preference. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a cozy, as the description states, or a police procedural. Rina Martin, who the series is named for, doesn't do any investigating of, or solving, of a murder. She's introduced at the beginning of the book, appears a couple/few times throughout, then again at the end. Mac, the detective, goes through the procedures of a murder investigation: collecting evidence and speaking to potential witnesses, but neither is used to solve anything. We learn of the murder(s) as the story unfolds, told by the killer or someone who was present while the murder was committed. It is not a "who-done-it" This is where my personal preference comes in. I like trying to figure out who committed the crime by being presented with the evidence. Police procedurals are my favorite genre, but I enjoy a good cozy if it is well written and the (usually) female lead character doesn't do stupid things. Rina is a retired actress and runs a type of guest house for other active and retired entertainment people. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of reading Julie Wassmer's debut, and the first book of this series, The Whitstable Pearl Mystery. So I was quite excited to read the second one and catch up with the lovely Pearl. After solving her first case as a private investigator on summer, she has been slowly building her business while still managing her restaurant. The 31-year-old smothered Catherine Wells-Burr, 23, as she slept at their home in Chard in September 2012. Broadway was jailed for life with a minimum term of 34 years, while Billy and John Broadway were jailed for 12 and 15 years, respectively, for Wilfred Snr's manslaughter.
