Description

Grown for their fragrant brightly coloured flowers lilies are mainly summer flowering bulbs. Each bulb produces an un-branched leafy stem, sometimes with annual roots in the lower plant. There are several flowers per stem, mainly trumpet to bowl- shaped. Each plant has a spread of up to 12″. Frost handy, lilies need sun and well-drained soil. Propagate by seed in autumn or spring, or plant bulb scales in summer. Lilies are easy to grow, there are 80 species to choose from. They are suitable for cutting for large flower arrangements. All lilies need a plant support. Lawn edge hoops The hoops provide an attractive finish to the edge of a lawn, especially our rusty finish.

Plant supports, in essence, provide sturdy and reliable structural support for plants, particularly those with weak stems or heavy foliage. They effectively prevent plants from bending, drooping, or collapsing under their own weight. By keeping the plants upright, these supports promote healthier growth and reduce the risk of damage from wind, rain, or pests. Reduce the risk of disease This versatile product can also be used to create an Extra Wide Support up to 600mm (24") wide – simply grasp the corners and pull outwards (see photo 2 below getting ready to support a large clump of sedums). Moreover, plant supports serve as guides for plants to grow vertically, offering them a framework to cling onto. This vertical growth not only optimizes space usage but also enhances air circulation around the plants, thereby reducing the risk of diseases. In addition to their functional benefits, plant supports have the added advantage of adding visual interest and aesthetic appeal to a garden or growing space. The gracefully curved shape of these supports can create an attractive architectural element within the garden. Furthermore, when plants are trained to grow along these supports, they can create a beautiful and organized display of foliage, flowers, or produce. There are 500 species of these hardy herbaceous perennials, differing in height, flower-size and colour. The flowers are daisy-like and in nearly all cases have yellow centres. Asters are frost to half-hardy, and prefer fertile well-drained soil. They can be propagated by division in spring or by seed in autumn. Asters need a sunny open position with well drained soil that does not dry out in late summers and autumn when they flower. Plant between October and March. The two-legged design will stop the support from swivelling round in the wind, and the circle can be opened out and wrapped around the plant, giving a snug fit. Plants will flower poorly unless they are watered regularly on light soil during dry spells. Staking or plant supports will be needed for older plants that produce a lot of shoots – the weaker shoots should be thinned out in the spring. Cut dead flower stems down in October to just above ground level. P.maculata (3ft) is a fully hardy erect perennial, which in summer produces cylindrical panicles of tubular 5-lobed, mauve-pink flowers from oval, mid-green leaves. ‘Alpha’ has rose-pink flowers.
