Draining the system and adding some jointing compound or PTFE tape is the next level to fix a radiator that is leaking. This is a lot harder but needs to be done. If you screw it all the way in so that the tail hits the open end of the radiator's female thread, it will never seal.

Knowing how to fix a leaking radiator valve will help you save money but you might need to replace it. To fix a leaking radiator drain valve, you will need to replace the rubber washer seal inside in most cases. I'd start with 15 to 20 wraps of ordinary (thin) PTFE. Screw the tail in. If it doesn't start to get a bit tight after 4 or 5 turns (threads), unscrew, remove tape, and replace with + 5 wraps (so 20 to 25) and try again.

What's OP? "¾" thread of the union nut" - that makes sense, but am I looking to replace the radiator tails as well then? What am I going to do if I measure the hole, aren't I going to attach the valve to the tail anyway? A leaking radiator valve nut is the most common and easiest leak to fix on a central heating system. 3 radiator valves nuts that can leak Has anyone experienced this before? I certainly didn't over tighten it when fitting so couldn't have damaged the internal thread. The tail is from a brand new Drayton TRV so I can't see that being at fault.

I have been fitting and fixing radiators full-time for over a decade and have learned a lot along the way. I understand that the fitting on the radiator is 1/2" BSP, while the radiator tails are 1/2" Taper Thread. They do if they (compression joints) are leaking. People wrongly assume you put the ptfe on the thread of a compression fitting. If you need ptfe, it goes on the olive as thats were the leak will be from.
