The company operated a chain of stores across central Scotland, in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Hamilton, as well as an online service, which sold fabric for curtains, blinds, soft furnishings, dressmaking and quilting. It served the general public as well as small business and local authority customers. Boden also fronts his own band the Remnant Kings, put together in 2009 to perform his post-apocalyptic song cycle Songs From The Floodplain. He has also made contributions as a fiddler, singer and guitarist, to three albums with Fay Hield& The Hurricane Party. Boden also plays acoustic guitar in Spiers & Boden employing a percussive finger style reminiscent of Nic Jones and Martin Simpson, [ citation needed] but using the tuning of CEBEBE. After university, Paul briefly played in the folk band Life of Reilly. One of his bandmates was the accordionist Paul Hutchinson and together they formed Belshazzar’s Feast in 1995. They initially played ceilidhs and social dances, where they were required to play the same tune over and over; but they began to sneak in snatches of unlikely classical and pop tunes, and their humorous musical style continued in concert performances, with Sartin adding the swanee whistle to the fiddle and oboe. They made 11 albums and completed a farewell tour in May 2022, although they played for dances at the Sidmouth folk festival in the summer.

Boden has released five solo albums, Painted Lady in 2006 released on Soundpost Records, Songs From The Floodplain in 2009, released by Navigator Records, Afterglow in 2017, Rose In June in 2019 (Jon Boden & The Remnant Kings) and Last Mile Home in 2021. In contrast to his national touring, Paul was also deeply involved in community music-making. He led the Andover Museum Loft Singers, a community choir specialising in local folk songs, in Hampshire. There and in other smaller settings, such as the music and song workshops at the Halsway Manor folk centre in Somerset, his kindness, generosity and humour shone through. Bellowhead had a total of seven singles ' playlisted' by BBC Radio 2, all but one of which were arranged by Boden. It was part of a wider global programme of events to celebrate Britten's centenary. The resulting piece used Britten's setting of the ballad for male voice choir, interspersed with five ‘interpolations’ composed by Boden, with lyrics co-written by him and Mary Hampton.
