Storch, G.; Seiffert, C. (2007). "Extraordinarily preserved specimen of the oldest known glirid from the middle Eocene of Messel (Rodentia)". Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. 27 (1): 189–194. doi: 10.1671/0272-4634(2007)27[189:EPSOTO]2.0.CO;2. S2CID 85909806. A dormouse is a purely nocturnal animal. Even the name for the dormouse comes from “ Doremus” which means “ the sleepy one”. Apart from hibernation, even during the day, they spend most of the time sleeping, which is fair why they are nocturnal animals. Hibernation and winter effect

In an attempt to recover the species from this decline, the People’s Trust for Endangered Species ( PTES) is releasing breeding pairs within woodland habitats to try and increase the spread of the breed. The Dormouse appears as a member of the Mad T Party band at Disneyland's California Adventure Park. In the Mad T Party he is interpreted as a male rather than 2010 film's female Mallymkun, whom he is based on. He plays lead guitar and often scurries around with the March Hare on stage. During their active time of the day, they will run and play around the cage and may test the boundaries. so make sure the housing structure has a secure lid to prevent them from escaping. One of the main characteristics of dormice that live in temperate zones is hibernation. Dormice can hibernate six months out of the year, or even longer if the weather remains cold enough. They sometimes wake for a short amount of time so that they can eat food which they had previously stored nearby. During the summer, they store fat in their bodies, to give the dormouse the energy it needs to survive through the hibernation period. [2] On the outside cover of the book is the dormouse eating a sunflower seed and peeping out from among some apple blossom. Turn the cover of the book and here we have your first feely picture. Can you find 3 mice on it? They're all different shapes and sizes. One's the dormouse and two are harvest mice.

Edible dormice usually spend around seven months out of the year hibernating in underground burrows. The rest of the year, these expert climbers—more closely related to squirrels than mice—take to the trees, only venturing from their hollows for a few hours each night to eat. This means opportunities to observe the animals are basically nonexistent, says Bujanauskas. ( Read about the fascinating ways animals prepare for cold weather.) The dwarf fat-tailed lemur of Madagascar is the only known primate to aestivate; it lives off fat reserves in its tail during a long dry season.

Dormice are nocturnal rodents that sleep a lot! It’s this sleepy nature that has given them their name, as it comes from the French word “dormir” which means to sleep. TheWildlife Trusts is a movement made up of 46 Wildlife Trusts: independent charities with a shared mission. In CLAMP's Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, the Dormouse is portrayed by a blond long-haired young woman, who, despite not having a single line (she just giggles), has quite a obscene scene when she sneaks into Miyuki's skirt, causing her to flee. In extremely hot, dry countries some creatures avoid the high temperatures and drought by going into a similar state of sleep called ‘aestivation’ or summer sleep. Reptiles and amphibians go into a version of hibernation called brumation. Because the cold-blooded things rely on the sun to regulate their body temperature, hibernation is essential for their survival in colder climes. However, their ‘ectothermic’ nature means that they are entirely reactive to temperature; if the winter sun comes out, so do they. The scaly things do not sleep the deep sleep of overwintering mammals. A dormouse goes into very long periods of hibernation that can last for a minimum of six months or sometimes even longer. The litter can produce up to four young who can be weaned after about one month. But the newborn will stay with the mother as juveniles for as long as 6-8 weeks before becoming independent. The State of Britain’s Dormice report , published by wildlife charity People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), shows that hazel dormice numbers have declined by 38% since 2000, and 55% since the 1990s, with changes to farming and woodland management practices shown to contribute to the species decline. Climatic changes, such as wetter springs and summers, which make foraging for food more challenging, and warmer temperatures in wintertime, which can also interrupt hibernation, have also be found to contribute.

Dormice are in fact, strictly protected by law. They may not be intentionally killed, injured or disturbed in their habitats or in their nests.

In addition, there is a Chain based off of the Dormouse in the anime Pandora Hearts. It is in a legal contract with Vincent Nightray, and takes the appearance of a large mouse with a wind up key in its side, and a large chain like tail that winds around its contractor. In addition it causes Vincent to fall asleep if he lets his guard down.Watch a researcher open a nest box and discover an edible dormouse in Neris Regional Park, Lithuania. Hazelnuts provide a great source of fat for dormice; so hazel trees are an ideal habitat. They need to bulk up for the winter months so they eat a wide range of things, including pollen, fruits, nuts and insects. Dormice can almost double their body weight just prior to hibernation, fluctuating from between 15-20g to 30-40g. UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 27: Hazelnuts (Corylus avellana), Betulaceae.
