Fletcher, who admitted that he is not particularly good in these situations, sat looking at his grandson. The boy clearly had a lot of energy to burn up. Fletcher set his mind to work and instructed Tobias to rummage through the waste bin, cupboard and drawers to find any old boxes, corks, bottle tops and string, because granddad was going to make a him a zoo. He left Pentagram in 1992, and worked from the home in Notting Hill that he had occupied since the early 1960s, where he was assisted by his daughter Raffaella Fletcher, Leah Klein and Sarah Copplestone, and worked for new clients, such as Novartis. Much of his later work was as art director for the publisher Phaidon Press, which he joined in 1993. For him, life and work were inseparable: "Design is not a thing you do. It's a way of life." (quoted in his obituary in The Times). He would continue working, even on holiday, drawing on a notepad with a pencil. [3] The Art of Looking Sideways introduced me to far-reaching and obscure things such as Botswanan basket weaving, Dazzle Camouflage and a beautiful an old Italian custom of letter writing in two directions on the same side of paper, to save paper because it was an expensive and precious commodity. It was the place where I discovered Shigeo Fukuda and Paula Scher’s maps for the first time. It is bursting full of random stories, facts, quotes, puns, puzzles, wit, humour, imagery, thought, creativity and fun—pulled together in a perfectly eclectic way by one of design’s pioneering original creative thought leaders. It had a profound effect on me and my design, and is a book I constantly reference to this day. It has a lot in it, it is very big. However I found it a little pointless at first not knowing what really to do with it. Being a Graphic Design Student I was told that this is a must have, however I'd say it's OK. That's it.
