About this deal

Disappointing - mainly because the book is mistitled and doesn't do what it promises from the title: there is actually very little about the long weekend (which didn't really exist as a term, anyway, at the time which the book is purporting to trace). Wife and mother Alice, wants advice on crafting a memoir she hopes will reach women who share her experience of motherhood. Tinniswood is the reigning authority on these old country houses. He has written 12 books on the subject and was awarded the OBE by the Queen for preserving the nation's architectural and social history This is thematic history with each of the 17 chapters based on a certain theme. There is a chapter entitled The King's House (George V, Prince of Wales, Duke of York).; The House Party (the long weekend from Saturday to Tuesday and When all three of their husbands are delayed, Emily, Jayne and Ruth set out to the remote Dark Fell Barn for their couples’ weekend alone.

I am a massive fan of Fiona Palmer, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this book. Thankfully it not only lived up to my high expectations; It well and truly surpassed them. This book was everything I had hoped it would be and so much more. There are myths about shapeshifters lurking around the woods. And three women find themselves in that claustrophobic cabin in the woods mystery, keeping secrets from each other and none of them are mentally stable. The tension is building. Somebody plays a really psychotic game with them!Beth, Simone, Alice and Jamie don’t know each other but before the three days are over, secrets from each of them will surface and they will know each other a whole lot better. Be aware that this book is more lesfic than lesrom - no vanilla romance or romantic comedy here. This would have been fine except - nothing much happen. The friends come together, reflect (ish) on their lives, drink a lot but... there's no takeaway. I'm unclear what was learned or what the reader is meant to have walked away with having read the book.

The Long Weekend: Life in the English Country House 1918-1939

This is the second book that I have read this month called The Long Weekend, but this one was so very different to the first! This Long Weekend is absolutely one that I am glad I wasn't part of. I don't think that there was one character in this book that I liked or cared about. But in this case I feel that it didn't matter, It was a dark and pretty intense read that kept me guessing until the end. Jamaica Holidays | Jersey Holidays | Kefalonia Holidays | Kos Holidays | Lake Garda Holidays | Lanzarote Holidays | Las Vegas Holidays | Madeira Holidays | Magaluf Holidays | Majorca Holidays | Maldives Holidays | Malta Holidays | Mauritius Holidays | Menorca Holidays | Mexico Holidays | Morocco Holidays | Mykonos Holidays This would have been eliminated in the physical format, and the many twists and turns that Gilly Macmillan concocted would have been more enjoyable.Once the women arrived at Dark Fell Barn, they proceeded to do nothing that would equate to the intent to have a fun weekend holiday. They were all so wrapped up in their own heads; just miserable. Why even bother? Whether the 3 lesbian couples can survive the weekend forms one of the core questions, as Ms Lydon explores how we deal with infidelity, lies of omission and co-dependency. Even the lone singleton is not immune to the affects of adultery. Wow! This is one of the best written, complex, twisty, extra smart and most intense stories Gilly MacMillan created! The Long Weekend is the fifth contemporary fiction novel from Fiona Palmer. It is the perfect book for both readers and writers as Palmer takes her fans into the heart of a three day writing retreat. With only four participants and a famous author, it is an intimate retreat that takes place in Busselton Western Australia. The Aussie author covers a multitude of topical themes that include social media, obesity, postnatal depression, emotional baggage, grief, tragedy and so much more.

The deeply layered, flawed, broken characters she’s developed catch you unguarded. Most of them are not likable but you still feel empathy for them after learning more about their problematic pasts. Yes, this novel raises the question of “How well do we really know anyone else?”. Just because you’ve known them for years and spent countless hours in their company, they might just be concealing their true nature… Four strangers attend a writers retreat for the weekend. Ofcourse they all have their own secrets. Everyone has secrets. Very intriguing the whole way through – you never really can know someone properly, can you? Such different people, each with their own unique story to tell. Reading through I felt as though I too was on the retreat; that feeling of getting away for a weekend. Getting to know each individual and finding out about their lives along the way. A couple of small, subjective issues lessened the impact for me personally- the characters are occasionally undefined and blended so you have to unravel who's who and one protagonist is the clichéd alcoholic whose addiction prevents sensible action. The Long Weekend" is a look at English country houses during the 1918-1939 period. The focus seemed to be the fate of the country house: who was selling, buying, renovating, redecorating, or building them. The author gave specific details about changes made to certain houses (including royal country houses) and the careers of certain architects or interior decorators. He included some general information about why it was difficult to sell old country houses, why people were selling them, various building or decorating trends, alternative uses found for country houses, and such. The characters all have faults, some more grave than others, and no one will escape the weekend unscathed. In the end, though, the story shows the power of love and friendship and that those friends who have known us the longest have a high tolerance for our shortcomings. Jayne has a hidden agenda to choose this exact place for their long weekend. Ruth fuels her delusions with alcohol, resentment, anger and fear and Emily acts like rebellious teenage daughter who got captivated by annoying adults. The note Edie sent raise their suspicions. Could Edie kill one of their husbands? Or could someone write a note behalf of her? And finally where the hell their husbands are? Why three of them have excuses to arrive lately at the same time? THE AUTHOR: Gilly Macmillan grew up in Swindon, Wiltshire and also lived in Northern California. She studied History of Art at Bristol University and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Was kind of eye rolling in the beginning but as the twists started being revealed I liked it more and more. Surprising thriller!
