Beautifully illustrated story about a robot whose broken heart is healed by the companionship of a little bluebird" ( Nursery World) Some of the prior attainment (retrieval) task at the start are based on previous books the children have read based on our Rise of the Robots topic and these can be changed to match your previous books. tears at the heartstrings . . . Readers of Lucas's previous titles will find his style as distinctive and his words as warming as ever." ( Independent on Sunday) A discarded robot offers a home to a cold bluebird. He finds his own value and worth, along with a new heart, by helping the bird migrate to a warm home. A sweet and touching story that students in Kindergarten and first grade will easily understand. A very simple story with a profound message. The metaphors within this book are numerous and none of them are forced. I would read this book with any child between the ages of one and ten and I think they would find the beauty in the text. In my opinion, this is one of the best picture books to b... ... The Robot loves the warmth and life the Bluebird brings to him and he offers to carry it through the cold lands to the warm south. When the Robot reaches his destination he is exhausted. A moving story about the power of friendship and selflessness, in this poetic homage to The Happy Prince. Maths -Create your own numberline (up to 10 or 20) using natural objects eg. 1 pine cone, 2 leaves.

There was once a robot with a broken heart, good for nothing but expiring slowly on a scrap heap. Then one winter's day a migrating bluebird lands on his shoulder, too exhausted to go further. The robot offers her shelter in the place where his heart used to be, and her warmth and singing and companionship stir up the last glimmer of energy the robot has; he carries her across snowy wastes to the warm south, whereupon his strength dies out finally. And there he still stands today like an old hollow tree, home every year to singing birds. Where’s the Robot?. Ross Mead April 3 rd , 2008. Where’s the Robot?. Given an initial estimate P (0) of the robot’s location in the configuration space , maintain an ongoing estimate of the robot pose P ( t ) at time t with respect to the map. Configuration Space (C-space). He asks the Bluebird to make its home in his heart. Now he stands forever, his rusted arms outstretched, while families of birds make their nests inside him and perch on him to sing. Why: I've heard this is a beautifully-written story and I want to keep it on the to-read list for later. I think it's a bit too sad for Logan now, but it might be just the thing when we suffer a loss. Someone said "it's the new The Giving Tree." I'll read it myself first. ...Each lesson has a ‘Steps to Success’ section which allows the children an overview of what they can do in this lesson to complete the learning successfully. These use simple imagery to support each step and hopefully help the children remember each step. R.E - shofar is blown on Rosh Hashanah to start calling people to think about the wrong things they have done and put them right. It is then blown every day for ten days until the very special day of Yom Kippur. Have a go at making a Shofar and bring it into school to blow! From my first look at the cover of the book, I thought "tin man" from the Wizard of Oz. I don't know if it's my mood or what, but the message in this book seems too blatant and "in your face". I love the illustrations, and the whole idea of the bird giving life to this robot who is missing his he...... It took a second or third reading of this to truly get to me, but once I fell in love with this title I fell hard. A very simple, very lovely tale. Lucas is one of those guys with pictures too subtlely beautiful to ever garner the attention he deserves.

tender, touching and hopeful... this modern fable about the power of love to regenerate unfolds at a gentle pace and to great effect.’ Julia Eccleshare, Guardian

In this activity linked to The Robot and the Bluebird, your Year 1 / Year 2 class will use the information in the answers to write suitable questions. Lucas produces his most meditative work to date in a tale that reads like a mechanical improvement on Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince.” When a robot’s heart breaks unexpectedly he is sent to the scrap heap to wait out his days, until one cold night a bluebird lands on him. She can go no further on her journey south and takes up residence in the robot’s empty chest. The robot offers her a permanent home there, and when she explains that she must travel south he offers to take her. The trip proves too much for the old robot, however, and when they finally make it, his last words to her are, “Make your home in my heart,” which she does, along with her fellow birds. A quiet beauty permeates this old-fashioned story. The illustrations convey the robot’s simple dignity, color, perspective and sequencing neatly choreographing the tale’s emotional trajectory.
