I’ve read and enjoyed Laura Purcell’s previous three books: The Silent Companions, The Corset and Bone China. I’m pleased to report that with The Shape of Darkness she has produced another entertaining tale steeped in wall-to-wall gothic spookiness. Creating atmosphere is her forte and all her books are pervaded by a creeping menace, darkness and paranoia.

This story is tragic in one ways than one. But the fates of both Agnes and Pearl slowly weave together to create a disturbing picture. One I didn’t see coming. Bath, 1854. BOOK OF THE WEEK - PressReader

You know the old saying, be careful what you wish for? Well the seances may just unleash something that neither of them want to confront! Laura Purcell is rapidly growing to be one of my go to authors for quirky, twisty Gothic historical fiction and The Shape of Darkness does not disappoint, it is up there with her other books, including the much praised The Silent Companions and my own firm favourite The Corset. I have read and enjoyed several other gothic novels by Laura Purcell, so I was excited to get the chance to read her newest work. I am glad to say I was not disappointed. The Shape of Darkness is genuinely creepy; not full on horror but it’s enough to leave you feeling distinctly uneasy after each chapter. There are séance scenes that’ll make you want to pull the covers up a little tighter and otherworldly encounters that’ll have you peering warily into dark corners of the house, convinced you can see shapes in the shadows. It triggers the imagination in the best of ways, ending with a series of consecutive twists that’ll alter the whole way you view Agnes and her unfortunate life. Three women make this story: Agnes, a silhouette artist, Pearl, a child spiritual medium and Miss West, Pearl’s older half-sister. Each woman has her own story and struggles but the way Purcell presents these stories and then mashes them together in a slow burning read is addictive. What brings these three women together, you ask? Why, murder of course. I especially appreciated the motifs from Ms Purcell's three other ghotic books delicately included in The Shape of Darkness. After a couple of her clients are murdered, she ends up consulting a medium to see if her ex-clients can tell her who has killed them and why she is being targeted. I'm not sure how many copies of 'The Corset' I have gifted to others and how many people I have recommended her books to. This book will be the same.

Darkness spell? - Role-playing dnd 5e - How to best use the Darkness spell? - Role-playing

A great murder mystery, aided by the author’s excellent application of deception, (I never guessed the way it would end!) along with the added intrigue of supernatural events. As with Purcell’s previous books, there is a good balance of apparently supernatural shennanigans vs. more rational explanations for events. While this juggling act keeps the reader guessing as to what exactly is going on, the mystery is paced perfectly, with new information dripped in at just the right moments to give you a chance to figure it all out for yourself and the final twist is delivered brilliantly. A story of a woman haunted in every way possible, I think it’sa future gothic classic.”- – Martyn Waites There are some books that leave a lasting mark upon your heart, and this is one of them. The narrative follows recently bereaved spinster Margaret into Millbank Penitentiary, where she volunteers to visit the prisoners. Margaret finds herself drawn to and increasingly obsessed by Selina Dawes, a medium whose last seance left one woman dead and another deranged. The Heart of Darkness: this power enables a vampire to remove their own heart and store it outside their body. For as long as it is removed, the vampire is immune to staking attempts, unless a stake is driven through the removed heart. Amalgam: Fortitude 2

Shade/Shadow – Free Exercise - Lingolia

This tactic is a sound one, only adding to the overall suspense and confusion. Is there a killer murdering Agnes’ clientele; or is there a more sinister, supernatural force at work? I have a copy of this – and am so glad it’s not leave the lights on scary – I’m a bit of a coward like that…It's her best one yet and that's saying something. A story of a woman haunted in every way possible, I think it's a future gothic classic We follow Agnes as she starts to notice a disturbing pattern among the people she cuts portraits for… 'She is still faced with the question: why are her sitters dying?'
