Cool Airship: The giant candy-powered dirigible that the Willoughbys fly to rescue their parents from the Alp. Jane discovers a baby on the family's doorstep. She brings the baby inside despite Tim's warnings, and the baby wreaks havoc. The Willoughby parents throw their children out of the house, forbidding them to return unless they get rid of the baby. The children follow a rainbow to the doorstep of Commander Melanoff's candy factory, and believing it to be a suitable home, name the baby "Ruth" and leave her there. On their way home, the siblings hatch a plan to improve their lives by getting rid of their parents. The siblings put together a vacation brochure full of deadly destinations that could potentially kill their parents and making them orphans.

I used to love Lois Lowry so much, until I heard her speak at the Brookline Children’s Book Store. She was…unpleasant, to put it mildly.

The children consist of Tim, the oldest, twins Barnaby A and Barnaby B, usually referred to as A and B, and Jane, the youngest. The children basically raised themselves, and came to realize that they needed to get rid of their parents before their parents disposed of them. They composed a plot that sent their mother and father on a trip around the world, with the hope that they would not return. Jerk With A Heart Of Jerk: The Willoughby parents through and through. When the Willoughby children confess that they were the ones that "orphaned" themselves and admit that they just want to be a proper loving family, it looks like Mother and Father have finally decided to change their selfish ways and be better parents towards their children. But, as it turns out, they didn't, and they end up leaving the children to a certain death just to get off the mountain.Jane cites Pollyanna and James as examples of orphans who had better lives after their parents perished horribly. Author Lois Lowry who gave us Number the Stars, The Giver, A Summer to Die and 30 + other children's stories has now given us The Willoughbys, a clever, tongue in cheek parody of "old fashioned" classic children's stories. Bart, who read the book aloud to me, fell in love with the book early when a baby is left on the Willoughbys’ doorstep (as, of course, often happens in children’s literature) and the Willoughbys take her to someone else’s house and deposit her on that doorstep, since they think she is not worth bothering about. They leave a little note on the basket noting that, if there is a reward, it should go to the Willoughbys. Then, the oldest brother leaves a little P.S. noting that the baby’s name is “Ruth.” When his siblings ask why, he replies that it’s because “we are the Ruth-less Willoughbys.” Come on – you can’t help but laugh at least a little. Tim is first seen admiring the hall of portraits and imagining that he has a spectacular mustache of his own, setting up his obsession with being a worthy Willoughby (as measured by the magnificence of one's mustache).
