Collins, Hannah (March 15, 2020). "The Real Viking Lore That Inspired Vinland Saga". Comic Book Resources. Archived from the original on February 22, 2021 . Retrieved February 22, 2021. Basically this volume covers Thorfin and group finally getting to vinland and beginning their quest to start a civilization free of war and death. This is pretty great change of pace, and watching Thorfin learn to trade with Indians while also building up his people's homes is great. There's some really great stuff in here, lots of thoughtful planning is put into how they began building up their villages work well.

Vinland Saga finally reaches Vinland in this 13th book. It's honestly less of a thrill than you'd hope - the build-up and battling in Europe were certainly more exciting than following a pacifist Thorfinn as he slowly engages with indigenous locals and plans a new society. Success!

It is a true testament of a book's writing and characters when it has you tear up at a character's burdens being lifted, and you feel relief for that character. Is this a last volume? I feel like the story can go on and on. One of the best I read this year. I really enjoyed it. All the volumes were equally good. Loo, Egan (December 3, 2009). Just saw two seasons of anime from this manga and at least the first one was not so far from being amazing. The manga has the same great art as the anime version and the only difference that I`ve found here is that it starts with another scene and timeline than the anime. Sentai Unveils "Vinland Saga" Home Video Plans". Sentai Filmworks. May 20, 2021. Archived from the original on May 20, 2021 . Retrieved May 20, 2021. Vinland saga; a story about forging a warrior. In a world where war and slavery are the norm, can we find peace? Can we build our own paradise on earth, or is it just a vivid dream? Thorfinn- a boy, a man, then a true warrior. A warrior for peace and prosperity. A leader for the people who seek to build paradise on earth—that's Vinland. This is their journey and mission. This premium, hardcover edition presents the acclaimed action epic in hardcover, at a bigger size than ever before (7 by 10 inches), wrapped in a red leather-patterned cover with logo stamping. This new edition features all the content of the original release, plus new and exclusive bonus illustrations, interviews, and behind-the-scenes details never before translated. Marketed towards young teen males, you can see how this would appeal to that demographic as if it’s about a young boy who trains himself to be a warrior who fights forces that are bigger than him. However, author Makoto Tukimura is not telling a simple revenge story as he is using the big picture, which is the Danes’ war with the English. Although Thorfinn is the main character of this manga as he starts off as a naïve child who doesn’t know any better, it is his father Thors, who is arguably the protagonist of this volume.

e-manga (in Japanese). Kodansha. Archived from the original on April 4, 2005 . Retrieved April 14, 2022. Askeladd and his band of Vikings, including a young teen named Thorfinn, assist a general in a skirmish between two Frankish tribes, leaving with the treasury's contents after they win. Thorfinn earns himself a duel with Askeladd after he brings him the defending commander's head. Askeladd gets Thorfinn to lose his cool and Thorfinn loses the duel. Thorfinn's childhood in Iceland is explored. In 1002 A.D., when Thorfinn is six, the visiting Greenlander Leif Ericson tells him and the village children of his travels to Vinland. Shortly after, Thorfinn's sister Ylva finds a half frozen slave in the snow. Halfdan comes to village to reclaim his runaway slave, but Thorfinn's father Thors buys him for eight sheep. Thors and his family bury the slave when he dies later that day. Retrieved August 1, 2023. After following the guidance of now aged Leif Ericson, Thorfinn and those that have put their lives and destinies in his hands make the journey to Vinland at last. Along the way and while they are safe on land decisions must be made, squabbles must be solved, and associations must be created with the indigenous people that have already lived in Vinland already even though they do not share a language and differ in many ways. Noooo *metal slap*, I need to get serious here, I appreciate this series too much to not try my best to form an actual review here. Following the end of the first story arc, critics were surprised by Thorfinn's quieter personality and noted that despite his life as a slave, the plot manages to make his life with other slaves interesting. [89] [90] The romantic relationship between Thorfinn and Gugrid surprised Manga News, though they still appreciated the handling of their wedding ceremony, which gave the narrative a lighter tone for a famously dark series. [91] Manga Sanctuary agreed, finding Thorfinn to live up to his father's legacy during his quest while finding his newfound family appealing, not only including his wife Gugrid, but also his adopted son who often defends him. As deep as the story can be, given its historical context as it features the factual Danish King Sweyn and his son, Prince Canute, Vinland Saga certainly plays loose with the truth, not least in its heightened action. There are aspects of the Shonen battle manga, in that you have a young boy who trains himself to be a warrior who fights forces that are bigger than him, particularly Thorkell, the giant man who loves combat and defects from the Danish army to become a mercenary for the English. The characters are very well made and believable in their motivations, every one of them with a interesting and complex story arc. The whole picture of the story is more complex and well made than expected, with a bigger scope on events than you could think of at a first glance, with a lot of surprises at hand. You know, Makoto Yukimura really capture the care free attitude of the Vikings. Their disregard for human life. Their obsession of battle. And unending thirst for treasure.

I love that Thorfinn and his family are getting some peace and joy; Thorfinn really deserves this. This transition shows the growth Thorfinn has gone through from a hot-headed youth to an adventurous father. However, these last few volumes have been a lot less engaging and exciting than the earlier books in the series. Vinland Saga has been commercially successful in Japan, with combined sales of 1.2 million copies for the first five volumes by June 2008. [78] It had over 5 million copies in print by 2018. [79] Several volumes have appeared on the Taiyosha top ten best-selling manga list. [80] [81] By August 2022, the manga had over 7 million copies in circulation. [82] Critical reception [ edit ]
