I will admit that I did not read the entire collection of poems; however, I very much enjoyed the poem "Bloody Men," which I shall post here and explain why henceforth. This is a seemingly simple poem in everyday colloquial language, but it explores some serious themes. These include aging, life phases, time passing, but most importantly identity. urn:lcp:seriousconcerns00cope:epub:30ba03d2-dbca-44fd-af95-47188b74c3cd Extramarc Duke University Libraries Foldoutcount 0 Identifier seriousconcerns00cope Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t21c4sx2j Invoice 11 Isbn 9780571167050 Also falling into this category is one of her most anthologised poems, the short and awesome ‘Two Cures for Love’, which runs in its entirety:Wendy Cope was educated at Farringtons School, Chislehurst, London and then, after finishing university at St Hilda's College, Oxford, she worked for 15 years as a primary school teacher in London.

In 1998, she was voted the listeners' choice in a BBC Radio 4 poll to succeed Ted Hughes as Poet Laureate. Excellent read for cheering anybody up on a rainy day, whether real or emotional rain. I think my favourite verse is the first one from "Men and Their Boring Arguments": Wendy Cope is not just a comic poet, and she can often move us with her touching account of falling in love (or, for that matter, out of love, or, for another matter, being single and not having anyone to love). This poem is a prime example.Bloody men are like bloody buses - you wait for about a year and as soon as one approaches your stop two or three others appear.” Her first published work 'Across the City' was in a limited edition, published by the Priapus Press in 1980 and her first commercial book of poetry was 'Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis' in 1986. Since then she has published two further books of poetry and has edited various anthologies of comic verse. His chief desire was to express himself and his own truth – and therefore life and humanity.” – Walter de la Mare on Edward Thomas really simple, which doesn't work for me with rupi kaur, etc. — maybe it works here because it feels like there's more meaning and less melodrama to the simplicity. I also personally like the parts that are more life-affirming and humorous. Elsewhere she seems to have been going through a more challenging time in her personal life, with many poems revolving around break-ups and general frustration with men, although her alertness to humour prevents her ever from slipping into cynicism. (This is indeed one of the uses of humour in life, as writers like Wendy Cope can teach you.) As remarked above, Wendy Cope can move us as well as amuse us. And although she is known for writing about the everyday, she has also occasionally engaged with more momentous events. Unfortunately, this wasn't really my cup of tea. It was written in the 90s, so the sensibility feels a little dated. There's a lot of "lol alcohol(ism) amirite" and "men are dumb, eh?" vibes that just feel so played out at this point. There are also references that I had to Google and something is thereby lost in translation.Three haiku from Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis, where they are presented as being written by the (fictional) Tulse Hill poet Jason Strugnell, were set by the composer Colin Matthews in 1990 as Strugnell's Haiku. When Andrew Motion's term as Poet Laureate came to an end in 2009, Cope was again widely considered a popular candidate, although she believes the post should be discontinued. Carol Ann Duffy succeeded Motion as Poet Laureate. According to multiple sources, Cope's favorite publication is Anecdotal Evidence and one of her favorite poems is Flowers from Serious Concerns, which is also one of her most famous. Faber & Faber was founded nearly a century ago, in 1929. Read about our long publishing history in a decade-by-decade account. In this collection, Cope also draws on an alter ego for the Strugnell poems. Strugnell’s version of a poetic voice is used to mix the elevated with the everyday and the outcome is comic. Christopher Reid’s review for the London Review of Books (17 April 1986) explains how the use of this persona adds a further layer to the wit:urn:oclc:25799309 Republisher_date 20140919100122 Republisher_operator [email protected];[email protected];[email protected] Scandate 20140916005105 Scanner scribe8.shenzhen.archive.org Scanningcenter shenzhen Worldcat (source edition) The United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. One thing I notice, looking at the two lists – recent and less poems – is that proportionally fewer of the recent ones make use of rhyming forms. I still love traditional forms, especially the Shakespearian sonnet, and have no intention of abandoning them. But it’s always been important to me to be able to do the other thing – as I put it to myself. Some people say there is no such thing as free verse, so I don’t call it that. I don’t know what to call it but I hope some of these poems demonstrate that I can do it.”
